    Buying an Audi

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Need advice from the group here. Looking to buy an A6, 2001 and newer, but what's the best for my money, 2.7T, 2.8, 3.0 or 4.2? How should I consider high mileage, will there be a lot of worries if I buy one in the 100k range or should I stick lower and pay a little more? Any advice, thoughts and opinions are welcome, thanks to all.

    Re: Buying an Audi

Lots of stuff already here you should read even if you only go back over last month or so you'll see titles of relevant threads.

2.7 hands down, a few dissenters might like the 4.2.

Timing belt and water pump at 80K; tie rods. I'd rather have 100K post-maintenance than 75K pre-maintenance, for sure. Oh, that's right, I do!

Thanks for the info, I tried searching but it keeps saying nothing found, unless I'm an idiot or drunk, neither by the way, I figured something should show up. Good to know about the mileage/maintenance.

How many miles will you put on it yearly?

Are you going to mod it at all?

2.7t, only one that comes with manual 6 speed, mod friendly but can be money pit, 4.2 fast only Tips, eats gas, not alot mod options, none except exhaust and body....2.8/3.0 i don't know....slow, can be fast if supercharged only Tips.

Good to know, need auto, wife will drive every now and then and doesn't want manual. The 4.2 would be out then, I want some good gas mileage since I'll drive it for work, see a lot of the 2.7t and 2.8 along with a few 3.0. Do the 2.8/3.0 have no balls at all or still have some good power?

If you're getting a V6 it's gotta be the turbo.

    Re: Buying an Audi

I am not sure how much you are looking a paying for one, but if you can try to find a CPO from an Audi dealer. If so then you will have no worries. If your wife is going to drive it you better do some training because Audis in general have less lower front clearance than other cars and women tend to destroy the lower front every time they park the car. By the way she says that she doesn't like my car, but she literally steals it every time I look the other way In regards to whether you will want to mod it or not, don't even answer right now because the first time I posted here I said no and now I can't even help myself...

    Re: Buying an Audi

Thanks for all the info everyone, appreciate it, especially since I am new to audi. Quick question, I found a '00 a6 2.7t with under 100k miles, what would I notice for a difference in the '00 versus an '01 to say '04? Would it still be same engine and such and mostly cosmetic changes for each year?

    Re: Buying an Audi

4.2 is by far the most reliable motor...at least the ones with power. Do the TB with the 4.2 and be done, and enjoy the widebody. The suspension stuff that goes bad happens to all of them. The 2.7t is a money pit. Even if you baby it, the turbo's will go. That will cost you $4000 at least. I don't mind the TIP on my 4.2. It's the first auto car I have ever owned. I'm an old man now though and I guess I just don't care.

    Re: Buying an Audi

thanks everyone for all the info, I found myself an 01 4.2. Tried the 2.7, the turbo was nice, but I have had turbos in the past, having he biturbo system seems like two more things to go wrong and not knowing how a previous owner took care of it, too much of a risk. The 4.2 is great, wife loves it and it's a hell of a lot of fun to drive, I have to admit. Now if I can find a few mods, (already looking at exhaust mods, want some rumble and to show the dual exhaust), any suggestions?

I am guessing he meant an in dash 6 disc changer. When you load a cd in, does the screen say 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 -5 - 6 on it? Not sure if the 01 A6 had in-dash changers or not. If not, it would be in the compartment in the left side of the trunk.

    Re: Buying an Audi

My cd changer is mounted in the trunk in the same compartment as my jack. Its an aftermarket that was in there when I bought the car, but maybe the stock changer is located in the same place???

    Re: Buying an Audi

it doesn't say 1,2,3,4,5,6 and no changer in the trunk, annoyed that he said it came that way and it doesn't, that and he's trying to find the other key for the car but graciously said i could pay $80 for another if he can't find it. I think I'll have him flip the price for that and get it to me free since he's been wrong on a few things that he was swearing by. Although I should know better with car dealers, finding an honest one is slim to none, no offense to any on this forum.
