Video (AWD Launching 101) Compilation of JHM cars

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
My good friend made this for me. He is also best friends with the owner of VAST, so hence the Detroit intro. All these cars are customers of mine (JHM) and located in CA, just in case there is confusion. Also my car is in there of course.

Some of the footage is new and some of the footage is old. But a great compilation nonetheless. I didn't even know he was making this video, it was quite a surprise that he took all the video I had shared with him over the past year.

    Enjoy!

Nice. I am already sold on the JHM shifter but will check out the vast clutches... oh, they're not for 1.8T.

I suppose I've been dropping it a lil' hot, at 4k on my OEM clutch... lol. I'll try 3k from now on, but then I seem to bog a bit. Quicker disengagement?

You will never get out of the hole doing a 3k rpm launch with a 1.8T, it can be done with a S4 because it makes way more tq at that rpm.

I dont understand why during the step part of the video it says to get the rpms and drop the clutch with the actual shot showing the rpms being held at 1 spot, but after that every launch is done by going WOT before releasing the clutch.

Won't work. That is a feature you can not disable. It is always enabled when the car is turned on.

That video was pretty cool. Nice editing job and the underlying music seemed to fit very well. I think I'll be getting a B5 S4 sooner than I anticipate. I love those cars.

Trust me, you cannot just rev a 1.8T and drop the clutch no matter how much power you have, the car will fall on it's face.

You need to blip the throttle between 3-6,000 RPMS and time the lights, the trick is to let the clutch out quickly and smoothly when the RPMs are on the upswing and try to catch it about at 5,000

Click the QM time in my sig and you will see exactly what I am talking about.

I wasn't paying super close attention to the platform and just figured I was doing it wrong.

Typically, I have to hit it with my weak sauce at about 4,000-5,000 rpm to get a hot shot off the line. When I do get it right, oh that Quattro launch feels so... *

It's hard to describe a love affair to outsiders but for those who know, it's not even necessary. As you do.

That's the way! I couldn't describe it so concisely because I am just learning the tricks of the trade (rarely though... new clutch and all).

You guys are better qualified than most to answer this question that I've heard 'round the campfire. Are we better advised to ride the clutch on launch more than to drop it to save the Quattro from the stress?

Re: Video (AWD Launching 101) Compilation of JHM cars

Do not ride the clutch at all, just let it out very quickly and smoothly. Try not to "side step" it as that is bad for the slave cylinder and clutch fork.

I get as close to the steering wheel as I can withough hitting my knees on is when the clutch is disengaged, set the seatback upright for good posture and try to stay focused. I thin blip the throttle and watch the lights, there are two types of trees (pro and sportsman) the pro tree has a .4 secong delay between the orange lights and the green light, the sportsman tree has a .5 second delay, on the pro tree all three ornage lights light up at the same time, the sportsman tree does a countdown.

When you atre letting the clutch out, you want to pull your knee to your chest as fast as possible without taking your fooot off of the actual clutch pedal, you will be needing to push the clutch back in for the 1-2 shift very soon, you do not want to have to hunt for it.

A JHM shifter makes the 1-2 shift seamless and helps quite a bit with the 2-3. If you are going to miss a gear it is usually the 2-3 shift.

Here is a video of one of my best launches http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_iomZK4060

Slipping = more heat and more wear on the clutch/flywheel.

If you want to decrease the stress on the driveline just increase your tire pressure, then decrease it a little at a time to get the right amount of traction.

To decrease the stress on the clutch you also want to bring the clutch pedal up to the point just below where the clutch wants to grab and cause the car to move forward. Then when you reach your launch rpm on the upswing just release the clutch all in one motion using nothing but your knee, you dont want to use any ankle movement.

Awesome vid. I did a double take near the end and said, "hey, that's my broken shifter!". Watching that makes me want to get back out to the track.
