    Uniden Bearcat BCD996T Scanner:

Can somebody explain to me how you actually go about using this thing on a daily basis? Does it just emit audible warnings when somebody is using a programmed frequency near your location? Do you have to mount an antenna on the outside of the vehicle?
Cool stuff with a little growl!

It is basically for monitoring two way radio, weather, traffic, anything you can pick up. You can program it with just about any frequency. When someone transmits on that frequency and you are within range, it will break squelch and you can hear what is being said.

You do not have to mount an antenna on the outside of your vehicle, but reception is much better if you do.

Hope that helps. BTW, the BCT996T is one of the best digital scanners out there. Do you have one, or are you just looking into getting one?

As said above, basically you program all local police frequencies into the unit and then when someone starts talking on one you can hear what they are saying. The only thing is that they may use codes and stuff that stand for certain acts and you wont understand unless you study that. The scanner can definitely prove useful though. Being able to know exactly where a cop is speed trapping or if your plate gets called in is priceless.
