a few questions before I buy

I am new to Audis but not to mechanics. I am looking to get an audi A4 or A6, just curious of what the pros and cons are. A4 1.8t or 2.8 or 3.0 A6 2.7t all quatro models.
I am wondering as far as performance maitenance, reliability, mileage expectancy, and modification, which one is best. I am really interested in the A6 2.7 biturbo. Now by biturbo, is that the same as twin turbo? Also, I know six spd os amazing, but how well do the auto''''s w/ triptonic hold up and perform, Wife wants auto I want manual, is it worth it?? Also what is the best overall Audi under $12,000. Any help would be appreciated. sorry for all the questions. I am just kind of oblivious to audi tech.

A6 2.7t will be fastest modded and stock pita to work on. 1,8t has tons of options and can be made very fast as well. pretty easy to work on as well. i wouldnt want the others unless they were for the wife.

there is no room in the engine bay.. You have to pull the engine to change a turbo on it..
