    My new B5 RS4..

    Is in germany, but Im thinking about buying it however I have now I dea what I would have to do to get it. would it be better to hire someone in germany to check the car out and make sure its in tip-top or should I fly out there get the car do all the paper work then ship the car and fly back to the states () , which to be honest I'd rather stay here and have the car shipped here that way its like a a birthday present..And would I have to do anything to the car to make it legal in the U.S.? I've never done this or known anyone who has so im looking to Az for help!

    I would personally go over there and look at it and take care of the paperwork. Then coordinate shipment and get lots of insurance. Containers tend to fall off ships quite often.

    As far as making it legal? I don't know that route.

    Did you question why it had a blown motor at 48,000km or a completely new paint job?

    I wouldnt touch that with a 10 foot pole. Plus federalizing the car would be insanely expensive.

    Im sure that if you were serious about buying it you'd have all that sorted out already, but if not, I suggest you PASS.

    There has to, HAS TO be a way to bring cars like that here. I know I saw an RS2 Avant here once and as far as I have read they never made it to the US..? But you might want to skip this specific car because it looks like it needs some serious work...

    I am not sure if he means that the Audi techs couldn't figure out how to fix it or if they didn't want to because it had been modified...?

    There's got to be others...

    take it apart, have them ship it in a bunch of sections, then reassemble it once you have all the parts back here. then drive it unregistered, and be cool

    You could say it was a kit car ala Mexi Beetle! Seriously though that is one bad ass Avant. I love the interior. There are plenty of people that import "Gray Market" cars. Good luck, I hope it works out for you.

    yeah I messaged him about it today, no response yet.


    And im serious about it, I just started to look into what you have to do to legalize it and I just found this car today so not a whole lot of info has been sorted out yet, thus why I asked you guys. It seems like I might just end up with an S4 which is fine with me, but this car would be nice... obviously

    I brought a car over from Europe once. A lot of paperwork and a lot of BS with meeting all DOT and EPA requirements. I did everything myself, but there are companies in US that will do all that for you for a fee. Start here: http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/import/ Good Luck.

    dont know first hand,but ive heard its extremely expensive to legalize a car in the US. That guy Paul bought a b5 rs4 in europe,stripped it down,and sent it over piece by piece and put it all into a b5 s4 sedan.

    Why would one do that? Put it all into a Sedan? Granted that photo you posted is a very nice car but, still. To discard a limited edition Avant? I'd rather deal with the headaches of getting it legal in the 'states than discard an Avant.

    I've seen a 2 at a shop right by my house. One is his and the other came in from another state to get a motor replaced. It was a silver one. He told me that someone in like Texas or new mexico brought a few in. I'm just going to convert my us avant into a rs4. Seems the easiest way and I won't be broke instantly. Plus I know the car inside and out from doing it.

    i think that you can try to pull the card that it was a collectors car as a reason for why you would want to import it, because i remember reading that collectors cars are easier to import, and that it is based off of the US legal B5 S4 Avant, with a bit of bodywork and different turbos.

    As for making it US legal, i think the only thing you would need to do is put on some headlights with the amber reflectors.

    its doable, it will just take a bit of work.

    That link spells out the majority of what is needed to make them legal.

    Its not just turn signals either... that is one reason it's so expensive.

    if you are going to do the work to get a real RS4, i would get an original one in great condition. The resale value alone in the states would be worth it. I think you are looking close to 100K to get one all dialed in and in your garage.

    I dont think it would cost $100k. Even if it is $60k for the car, I can't see a $40k bill to get it federalized. Maybe $25k. Especially b/c it has been done before and somebody (probalby J.K.) knows exactly what it needs.

    If I were serious about getting one, Id contact that J.K. company and see what they have to offer. The euro exchange rate is murderous at the moment though, and I dont see it swinging back anytime soon.

    Its not looking good I contacted him and he said he wouldn't do anything on the importing and that he would rather not do that, and he beat around the bush on the blown engine he blames mechanics and they blame him for modifications..and he didn't tell me why he repainted just that he did and it wasn't because of a car crash or anything. Its up in the air I have other things going on right now, and this RS4 looks shady hes not telling the whoe story, I found one in the U.K. but the exchange rate..fuck that. If I end up with an S4 im not gonna complain but an RS4 avant would be sick of course.

    I receive Audi driver mag. And there (in the UK) I always see several adds for RS4 Avants for sale. You might want to check there because there seems to be quite a lot of RS4 fans in England from what I can read there. you would (of course) be dealing in English...

    From what i remember, it took Josh at Actuning (now Status) 11 months to get it federalized. He sold it to a guy in Cali about a year ago. Wish i had more details on what else it took to get it over here.

    Yeah, its the same car, just new magnesium wheels.
