    anodizing FMIC

Thinking against painting my FMIC with Eastwood's Radiator paint and anodizing my FMIC.

What type of anodizing is best for a FMIC? I'm thinking Type III (Mil-A-8625). Do I want non-dyed or dyed?

    http://www.difruscia.com/MIL_A_8625_F.pdf

Why? I want my FMIC to be black. I don't want to be able to see it through the lower grilles of my bumper. I don't like the flashy look.

Thanks in advance. I'm going to post in the B5 forum too.

I've heard that it will reduce the effectiveness for cooling, but I bet it's very, very minimal.

    Re: anodizing FMIC

just paint it. i used the eastwood rad paint and it's holding up perfectly after 2 months. IAT's are great also.

it's said that it will actually help heat disipation(and im not just talking about what it says on the can lol)

I've been painting my fmics for years... logged IATs before and after and never had a problem. no special paint necessary, just enough to get the desired effect.

Oh yeah. Super Sleeper Avant! That's my style.

If I do wind up painting with the Eastwood paint it'll be very thin layers. There was some talk of this in the B5 forum the other day.

Going to call around and see what the going rate is to get this anodized first.

It's a Mil Spec...nothing secret in it. They are military standards on how certain things are to be done by military requirements.

    Re: anodizing FMIC

if you anodize, go group 3 since its not just cosmetic and actually is hard enough to prevent most damage done by sand/ most little rocks... wrc cars have been using it for years for this reason and mines done that way too

    Re: anodizing FMIC

Can you even get that specific type of anodizing done? The anodizing shops I've dealt with just know "anodizing", and not specific types.

Anodizing generally does reduce the thermal conductivity, and quite a bit, but in the actual application, it may not be a problem and there may be differences between the various types of anodizing. Google for a company called "caswell plating" (or something like that). They should be able to inform you for sure. Also, I remember wikipedia has some info on anodizing.

    Re: anodizing FMIC

As long as the paint is applied in very thin coats I don't see why the Eastwood paint would be a problem. I am still going to get some quotes to anodize my IC.

To Jake's point, anodizing Type-III will be more durable than paint. It is, effectively, a hardcoating. Anodizing is also a very thin layer (0.001 inch) so you won't really see any losses in cooling effectiveness. Same goes for paint if you put a very thin layer of paint on.

    Re: anodizing FMIC

Go with type III hard anodizing. not the dye shit or paint. The core takes a beating on the road. Hard coat anodizing will provide better corrosion resistance and high durability. I can get your core anodized in Berthoud CO for $50.

Increases delta-T cross the core, cuts down on cooling enough to matter. Question: WHY?
