so the braided material on the flex-pipes are ripped off. i have not re-installed the downpipes yet to know if they leak. do those braided pieces have anything to do with the seal? if so, can i have a set of dumps welded in?

They shouldn't have anything to do with the seal. I just installed a new exhaust a couple weeks ago and one of mine was ripped and I don't have a leak.

that mesh is for limiting the flex on the rippled piece behind that mesh... mine was ripped and i just cut the rest of it off but then i heat rapped the entire dp..
