APR Stage 1 yesterday... CEL today...

BOOOO! Was sitting at a stop light today.... the car rev'd itself to 3k followed by a CEL. Had no other choice but to finish my short trip home. Light turned green, the car drove fine, pulled into the parking lot.... idled regular for about 2 seconds then rev'd itself back up to 3k before I shut it down.

    ?

No VAG of my own and can't get to the shop until tomorrow morning? Should I not drive it 40mins to the shop? Didn't seem to run any different while driving just at a stop.

The very same thing happened to me, except the car shuddered and jolted the entire ride home. It was running on two cylinders, as the coilpacks for 1 and 3 went out.

You might have packs on the way out, and it seems to be a pretty common theme after getting chipped. Some people suggest you close the gap on your plugs from 0.32 to 0.28 or so. I went the Hitachi E-revision route after blowing several R's, and haven't blown a pack since.

You can swing by Autozone or your nearest chain parts store, and they will probably read your codes for free.

Is it relatively safe to drive under these conditions or will I be causing harm?

Since you said it was driving fine, they (if it is the CPs) haven't blown completely. It'll be safe up until they blow, then things get bad. The cylinders that aren't getting spark will dump their unburnt fuel/air mixture into the turbo and cat, both of which will start glowing a nice orange color shortly after. It seems to be common practice to keep spare coil packs in the trunk for occasions like this.

I'm assuming since you got chipped you've got the 1.8T, correct?

Yeah, 1.8T and relatively new to the this car and engine.... switched from an e36... how difficult is it to change the CPs? I guess I should start searching for a DIY.

Re: APR Stage 1 yesterday... CEL today...

I got 93oct w/ stock program.. It wasn't really idling rough today but when I was leaving the gym it was idling above 1k then at the next light it was idling at like 1.5k...then the next shot up to 3k followed by CEL. I think i'm going to bring it down the street to Meinekee just to have them read the code and see what I need to do.

Great thread. I was getting worried with the recent APR flash problem threads as I'm thinking about getting it. Will make sure to have a CP in the trunk from now on...

I say do it! The added power makes the car a whole lot more fun to drive! I also noticed while I was underneath changing out my DV that I have an exhaust leak at the flex joint.......... looks like its time for DP-Back exhaust and 1+ upgrade.
