    Half Shafts?

Ok well for awhile now my car has a loud clicking coming from my drivers side when i turn the wheel far to the left, so I figured that I had a torn cv boot, but when I took it to a garage to sort out a coolant leak the tech mentioned that I needed a new half shaft. So when I checked it out to see if it was a torn boot there was no tear, but I noticed when the axle meets the tranny (Which i assume is the half shaft) i could ever so slightly move it up and down, but on the passenger side for comparrision it doesn't budge at all. My question is, is the part that meets with the tranny the half shaft? And if It is Where is the cheapest place to buy raxles.com? Thanks guys i know it was long one.

    Re: Half Shafts?

The part that meets with the tranny is called the inner CV joint. The actual mating surface is called the flange, and the part on the tranny is called the output shaft flange. If neither of your boots are torn, then chances are your joints are fine and you don't need to replace the half shaft. BTW, the half shaft is the entire shaft with both outer and inner joints attached.
If you're sure the clicking is coming from that side of the car, then I would take apart the half shaft and re-grease both joints. If that doesn't fix it, then buy a new half shaft (it's rare for them to fail without a loss of grease).

    Re: Half Shafts?

I got my halfshaft locally from a store called parts for imports for like $70. Both of mine have a little play in and out, but not up and down. I assume that's the way they're supposed to be

    Re: Half Shafts?

The design of the inner joint is such that it HAS to have in-out play in it. Talk to some more mechanics about it and you'll see....

    Re: Half Shafts?

I'm not talking about play in the inner CV joint, rather in the output shaft flange

    Re: Half Shafts?

Ahh, in the case, there should be none, but as the diff wears, you will start to get more and more play until they start leaking oil and you need a rebuilt diff.
