So i got a new grill from the classifieds on this lovely forum. I knew i wanted to do atleast the vinyl and thought it would be easier to do it off the car then on! well i went a different route. I think it turned out great! I might do this to all my chrome!!

Materials: I got in a fight with the cap!!

All taped up: This is the most important part and was a little time consuming but well worth it.

    Sprayed:

    Finished:

I also did the strips on my filler plate, here it is on the newly painted grill:

Next to the old grill still on the car:

Close up of the filler plate on the old grill:

All i need to do now is swap the grills and i should be set!!! And i'll get some better pics tomorrow in the sunlight! started at 5pm and finished and untaped by 10pm.
    The usual things!!

    Re: New Grill mod!

Nice job. So everyone else who wants to do this knows, the chrome trim piece pops off so you don't have to tape it off. Also did you clear it? you might have some chipping otherwise, that's why most guys who blackout (b5,b6) use plasti-dip since it's more of a rubber coating and won't chip.

    Re: New Grill mod!

HA i tried to get my chrome peices off and it wouldn't come so i gave up and taped it off. i did clear it and i was going to use plasti-dip but decided not to.

dont forget to clearcoat and wetsand a little.

i did that on my old jetta's grill, and after about a year of highway debris, it started to freckle.

    Re: New Grill mod!

The trim is possible to take of, you just need to figure out how to press the little taps on the back of the trim piece.

^_^ interested to see what it looks like on. the grey filler plate may pass for being color match to the rest of the car.

I am non S-line as well, and I was thinking about this as soon as Silver posted up her pictures the first time... but then I realized that this only works in states that do not require a front license plate because you have to get a Euro plate for it and there's no filler plate option (unless I'm wrong)...

    Re: New Grill mod!

That non s line rs4 grill seems to show up in just about every thread.

The grill will chip no matter what, especially in MN.
