    do i need coilovers?...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
i'm thinking about investing in some co's, but at least in back my car looks pretty low already with the sport suspension. i've got 245/40/18 tires. obviously co's would still improve the ride quality, but i'm worried i'll get massive rubbing in back. i'll leave it to my esteemed forum colleagues to sway me... also h&r or stasis?

    thanks!

    Re: do i need coilovers?...

honestly...i have sport suspension and i think my car is low enough with it, especially living in new york with the shit roads. the only problem i have is the front with the sport suspension, it's definitely higher than the back. the back of my car looks so low but the front i wish i could tune it lower a notch.

    Re: do i need coilovers?...

Its a easy vote for yes when its not your money. If you have the cash and are willing to spend it go for it. If not buy springs or just enjoy it as it is. Your sport shocks can handle springs.

    Re: do i need coilovers?...

IMO, second to a chip, upgrading the suspension is one of the most important mods one can do if they want to improve the look and handling of the car. These cars look surprisingly more aggressive lowered.

ha... i knew everyone would vote yes. just needed to pretend i tried to consider not spending the money!

it does bother me that the front seems so much higher than the rear...

i see a lot of chatter on the forum for stasis and h&r. anybody have a strong opinion on koni or whether it's worth the extra money to go bilstein?

Well STaSIS Street Sports and one of the types of Koni are the same. STaSIS takes the Koni C/O's and adjusts the damping and ride height to what they have found to be the best for ride and handling.

    Re: do i need coilovers?...

You should by my set of Neuspeed race springs. for FWD.
I had them on the car for 1 week and decided it was to low for me. ( We have snow here in Utah) But they may be a good height for you. The springs are still at the car shop. I had them take it off my car within the week they were put on so that they would remain new. They are literally brand new. $200 bucks + shipping if you want them. Here is a picture of how the car sits on the Neuspeed Race Springs.

    Re: do i need coilovers?...

Coilovers are not enough to "change" the car's handling characteristics. If you want what I consider to be "decent handling" with even crappy tires, look into: a GOOD set of coilovers (none of this Tein Basic/SS, springs-only crap), then sways to balance out the suspension behavior under stress and top it off with a properly set alignment (and corner balancing).

Even a good set of coilovers would only merely, marginally improve the car's handling. Then there are things like adjusting the shocks for a good balance between steering input sensitivity and bumpsteer absorption.

I don't know man, I feel that the Coils I put on there have changed the handling characteristics of the car pretty drastically.

    Re: do i need coilovers?...

^ That depends from person to person. I posted a video blog, preview of my official review on this recently. There are many variables in suspension tuning: spring rate, shock dampening, ride height, alignment, weight ratios. As far as I'm concerned there's probably only one or two other people other than myself on this forum that been playing with those various settings.

But imho, coilovers itself didn't do it for me and after adding on a set of stabilizers it cleaned things up a bit more...and I'm still craving more.

    Re: do i need coilovers?...

ofcourse you don't 'need' them. the car should handle and ride fine on oem sport. it looks lower than 95% of other stock cars, so to the general person...your car is already 'low'. The color black lets the fender, liner, and tire blend to minimize the appearance of the fender gap. Then only people that will notice it are enthusiasts and yourself.

that being said, your car will look and handle much better with a set of coilovers. the drop really gives the car an aggressive stance, and will make your wheels look larger and better. I'd recommend Stasis.
