You guys don't go by the computer on your cluster? I have the little wrench button on my dash that is supposed to calculate how you drive and then judge when you will need maintenance. I do mostly city driving and it usually calculates about 4k miles to the next oil change. Do you guys just not trust that or what?

I have the service plan with Audi and then change on my own between services...so every 5k. I'm pretty sure the service indicator is set to pre determined mileage intervals.

It's not. When I had my car serviced, I noticed that the car no longer had an estimate to my next service. When I looked in the manual, it said that it will calculate an estimate after 2-300 miles, and further change that estimate based on my driving.

Sure enough it came on later.

Exactly. If the dealership or whoever changes your oil and resets the computer, when you hit the little wrench button it will say "----" and that means it is calculating how you are driving to determine when you need your next service. After a few hundred miles it will come up with the days left to your next service as well as the miles. Like I said earlier, it usually comes up with about 4000 miles give or take to my next service.

Re: How often you change oil?

Zebman and Glassnpowder98 are correct. The car is designed to utilize all its sensors to measure engine temp, boost, oil pressure, throttle position, and so on to calculate when the oil needs to be changed. This is based on when you reset the dash and assumes you are using factory spec oil. In all honestly, the days of 3000 mile oil changes and traditional 'tune ups' are part of the past. Synthetic engine oil can easily last well past 3000 miles even under harsh conditions, and aside from needing new spark plugs every 30k or so (if using platinum)...cars don't need anywhere near the level of upkeep that they use to.

At minimum stick to Audi's schedule. You can actually do most of the service yourself, its mostly just fluid checks and inspection, but that doesn't stop Audi from charging hundreds everytime they give it a once over. http://www.bentleypublishers.com/ima...ance.sched.pdf

    PS...change mine every 5k.

Every 5K. I did dealer intervals on my first lease, needless to say, when I took it in for the first oil change, the oil looked more like tar! Waiting 10k is waaaay to long, especially the way most members of this forum drive!

Man, I just got this revolutionary idea! We should check the dipstick! You know, the dipstick! And put our heads to rest on how dirty the car's oil is at xxxx miles.

4K miles on fully synthetic oil is too soon, don't waste your money. audi does it in 10K intervals for a reason, because syntec lasts quite long. the oils color + viscosity probably won't change a bit from 4-8K, check and see. i change it usually at 6K, but there are plenty of people that do it every 10-12K miles without thinking twice. 4K just seems ridiculous...are you going to change non-synthetic oil every 2K miles because it doesn't last as long??? honestly, i think oil manufacturers even recommend 10-15K miles....

Yeah I know what their reason was and it's not because they're brilliant. This was a dumbass idea by many of the luxury car companies to lower maintenance costs for the owners to sell more vehicles. The idea is that if you spread out the high maintenance costs for their vehicles over longer periods of time that it will lessen the shell shock of a $500+ bill for services. This is based on synthetic oil manufacturers claim that their oils can remain fully effective for 10-15K miles. You need look no further for evidence than Mercedes' somewhat recent reduction of service intervals from 10K back to 7K (which is what they used to use). They've had too many cars having problems. I change mine every 5K. Fuck the manufacturers and all their brilliance...lifetime tranny fluid my ass... $60 is a small price to pay for peace of mind.

As the tour guide at the Porsche factory in Stuttgart said when explaining why the yet-to-be-released Cayanne took so much oil: "Oil is cheaper than a new engine."

I use this philosophy today and change mine every 5k. Maybe its just my imagination, but my car seems to run better after this.

Think of it this way, it certainly won't hurt your engine to change oil every 5K. Here is what I am doing right now. Since I have a few cases of free Royal Purple lying around, I am going to flush the oil out every 5K, but replace the filter every 10K. When I run out, I'm going back to 10K intervals, preferably with the new Pennzoil Ultra.

Royal Purple is a great oil, but there has been speculation of it shearing on turbocharged engines after 5K. So, to counter that possibility, 5K flush it is. As for the filter, 10K is Audi spec. I drove 14K miles in the past year...so changing that filter 3x a year would be rough. Speaking of which, I really gotta' give credit to the idiot who decided to place the filter on the bottom end of the motor.
