How many miles have you gotten on your K04s??

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Just a poll to see what's up with the K04s. I've had them in now for 7 or 8 thousand miles, and barely hear them working. Maybe I got lucky Knock on wood! Post how many miles you have so far on them. There is a lot of smack going around on these turbos just want to see what real world numbers look like as terms of reliability.

dont post if they BLEW. Im looking to see how many people have had them for a while without any problems. if they blew you can mention that at how many miles and reason why.

Re: How many miles have you gotten on your K04s??

I love this thread. Hope you get a lot of responses. I want to go eventually with k04's and was planning on it because supposedly they are more relyable.

One thing though, if people beat the crap out of their turbo's and try and suck the most boost out of them I can see how some dont last for long. but that probably isnt the case allt he time.

that is a good thread, thank you....

goingscott.... yeah thats what im looking at as well... see i baby my car, when i say that i am RELIGIOUS about the warm up and cool down of the car, i mean boost doesnt see daylight until oil is at 200, nothing below and coolant is obviously up @ that point. when i do a few pulls its usually for logging, i dont track, i dont race it. just wanted a car to please ME when i wanted. im not trying to kill myself in it.... also to note, hopefully he replies, but jayson @ JHM has gotten over 45K and hes raped his turbos with many many many track days and lots of pulls etc. but im sure he also maintains them with proper cooling and warmups

Re: How many miles have you gotten on your K04s??

    Wow deb38 that sucks!!

But in fairness to the K04, the wrong kind of or enough debris could kill any turbo...

So those who've had K04('s) actually fail should also include whether they warmed up/down the turbos and to what degree, whether they were bought brand new, and final determined cause of failure to educate us:

-- Oil coking in turbo/oil flow blocked?
-- Compressor blade(s) toasted by debris etc?
    -- Seals?
-- Overboosting/used way outside of turbo's efficiency range?
-- Treated the thing(s) like gold and it just died?
    -- Something i'm forgetting?

Fault oil lines and debris are usually to blame for turbo failures.

Thanks. good stuff. What do you say is the efficiency range in these turbos in PSI. I've heard (and hope since I run it ) that tapering to 22 by redline is safe, on pump 93 for that matter. the spike can range from 24-25 ish safely but thats only a spike they say what matters is what its holding @

Re: How many miles have you gotten on your K04s??

The turbos were designed for stock rs4 boost, which was in the 15psi to 16psi range. That is why you don't hear of people shredding turbos on stage 3 - that often.

Re: How many miles have you gotten on your K04s??

I should have about 16k miles on mine right now and they seem to be working great. If I can ever get my car working the way I want it to! I have a boost leak right now so I can't drive it hard... :(

Just last week I had the car in getting a clutch installed and I felt the turbines from the hotside and there was like zero shaft play in either of them, so they should be strong for quite some time.

Just because theres no shaft play doesn't mean there good to go. Mine had NONE with 150k on them, you just never know.

Good thread Audisport. I have been wondering the same thing. I'm a firm believer that if you warm them up and cool them down properly then you should get good longevity out of them.

thanks man, just figured that lately there is a lot of praising of the GTs going around, and there is a lot of mis informed "new bies" lol because a bunch of people just bash the K04s with the whole old technology thing, however i think there are more people than we think that have had their stage 3 running strong for quite some time now. I agree with you, thats why I really try to do my part on taking care of them. hopefully more people chime in !

Re: How many miles have you gotten on your K04s??

My passenger side turbo has been screaming since the day it was installed. From the date the turbos went in till 2 weeks later, they only saw stock boost.

I'm fairly convinced that my passenger side compressor blades are either bent or chipped. I'm just going to run it till it fails. Until then, it still makes plenty of power. The driver side unit is barely even audible at 22PSi.

I blame the dealership that did the install. The tech must have let something fall into the inlet on that side and it dinged the wheel as it passed by.

They were installed on October 7th of last year. I have put 20K miles on them and not a thing has changed. No smoke, no oil leaks at the downpipe, no boost leaks or strange fluctuations.

I originally spoke to Shawn @ Kinetic once I got the car home and he explained how long it takes Borg Warner to replace these under warranty so I decided to just run this one till it fails and then buy a replacement CHRA for a quick swap out.

The only reason why my car didn't return to the dealer is that I bought the K04s/inlets from Kinetic and had them install the parts with no warranty on the job. That was my mistake. Live and learn I guess.

Yet another fine example why I don't let other people work on my cars.....

the same thing was on SX forum a couple of years ago with the disco patatoes (GT28RS) alot of people bashing them and stuff , but it is true it's all in the fitment... the same with a engine build, you can have the best and nicest upgrade stuff but if something isn't balanced right or placed in the right order your new fully built engine will blow after a short period...

Re: How many miles have you gotten on your K04s??

I'd like to add some notes on my K04s to confirm that the passenger side compressor wheel was ruined. (read post #16)

In September of 2008 (only a few months after my previous post in this thread), I pulled my motor and rebuilt my K04s.

The passenger side compressor wheel was bent on every leading fin edge. In July of 2008, I found the source of the problem. There was the remains of a black plastic zip tie (including the locking portion) in the bottom of the passenger side IC.

This was from Riverside Audi's attempt to install my K04s the first time. The dope that did the job dropped a zip tie in the inlet and as soon as he started the car, that compressor wheel was damaged. This explains why my passenger side turbo was loud from the day I picked it up from them.

Furthermore, I replaced the CHRAs on both turbos in September of 2008 and I now have about 50K miles on these K04s and they are 100% solid.

Rebuilding them wasn't very hard, it just requires patience and marking the positions of both housings before you take anything apart.

This makes me feel better too as well. I'm still looking around at S4's and the few that I've been looking at have at least 20k on the K04's. I always do warm up and cool downs on turbo engines so hopefully they'll last me another for a long time unless some freak problem occurs.

30,000+ miles as full stage 3. Probably 50,000 miles overall on the K04s as they were already installed running on a stage 1 chip when I bought the car.

Wow that musta SUCKED to deal with....glad you got that fixed up...

A good lesson too actually - ANYTHING in that intake stream (including inside the intercoolers) can spell disaster instantly (same with not removing oil line plugs), be careful on the K04 installs and while working on the intake too, keep everything clean gents! I know it's obvious to most but still...
