Does the 2001 1.8T Really Use Wideband?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have a 2001.5 A4 and I have been told that my current 02 sensors (well at least the pre-cat one) are wide band and not the normal narrow band sensors.

With that said can anyone (a) confirm this is the case and (b) tell me if I can use a narrow band A/F gauge to get a wideband measurement? And finally if I cannot use a normal narrowband a/f, what do I need to do to use my vag-com to get a a/f reading so I can see how close my car is to stoich.

    (a) Is it true that the 2001s have wideband o2 sensors?
    (b) Can I use a narrow band A/F gauge and display wideband results?
    (c) What is the calculation that needs to be applied to results for a/f wen looking at the results via vag-com?

Please help me out. I did a search and I am pretty sure that (a) is true but couldn't find too much info on the second two questions.

Yes it is true, the 2001 has a wide band pre cat sensor but you can not just tap into it for using with a wide band sensor gauge. The wide band sensors must use their own sensor which means you need to add another sensor in your dp.

I figured that was the case. Is there any way that I can use my vag-com to check the lamda readings? I was under the impression there is a calculation I need to apply in order to make the readings worth looking at.

Block 32- It gets your fuel trim percentage and tells you if you are running lean, rich , or stoich.

Oh I thought I was supposed to use Block 31 which is the lamba reading channel.

Block 32 is going to tell me how much fuel correction I have but it will not tell me how close to stoich I am.

Correct. Block 032 gives you fuel trim adjustment readings for idle and part throttle. Block 031 gives you lamda readings and if you want 02 sensor voltage readings like you would get on the narrow band cars its block 033 IIRC.

If I wanted to see how close I am to stoich, do you know what the conversion is? My assumption is that when looking at block 031, 1 equates to 14:1 then a lower voltage would indicate less air for the a/f ratio but I am not 100% about that.

stoich and 1.00 = 14.7:1, so you multiply your reading on block 031 for the 2001+ cars by that 14.7.

Example of what you should be seeing at WOT
    .8 x 14.7 = 11.76:1

Oh duh that makes sense. Thanks again Mike! As always you are very helpful.
