Some observations from my own experiences:
1. BOV will eat gas, probably because of all that unmetered air, not getting back into the intake track. The car tends to run richer than with a DV setup.
2. Free flowing air filters, 'seem' to eat more gas. Stock airbox gives me the best mpg.
3. mufflers make a huge difference. on the same note, running cat-less will most likely eat gas, probably because the exhaust gases from the manifold pass with much less restriction through the turbo as compared to a setup using a Cat.
4. Weight. I have a sound system in my car, a heavy ass one at that. I dropped 2-3 MPG depending on driving conditions just because of the system.
5. Rims do make a difference. On 17s, I had the best MPG. 19s are no good on gas.
6. FMIC has decreased my MPG. Even though it was designed to has as little pressure drop as possible, I did notice a slight drop after I installed.
7. Sludge?
So here are some solutions that i have followed:
1. i got a foam air filter from JC Whitney. This fit inside stock airbox. MPG improved and I felt more power as compared to stock.
2. If you can run a HFC, that's a good option because a little of airflow restriction may go a long way to create some backpressure for your engine/turbo. Especially from dead stops, you may n ot notice it, but It seems the engine will overcompensate for the lack of backpressure to car going from a deadstop. If you help it out a litttle with a HFC, you should see an improvement in MPG.
3. SEAFOAM is your friend. Use it to Clean your injectors and fuel system. Use it in the crankcase (sludge?), and finally in the intake manifold (vacuum track).
4. Unload your car of unnecessary equipment, junk.
5. Depending on what body kit you have, you may want to get one with less of a "snow-plow" bottom valence. My Reiger creates massive wind resistance. I noticed this right after I put it on. It creates more Down force, but probably at the expense of creating more drag as well.
Anyway, that's what comes off the top of my head at the moment.
Happy Tuning.
Z out.
