It seems like everyone gets better gas mileage than me

I drive about 60% streets and 40% highway.

Whenever I'm looking through threads I see people getting like 330+ miles a tank. At most I'll get 240-250. One time I got 295 when I was going about 80% highway. What's the deal?

My engine mods are only Neuspeed chip, neuspeed exhaust+test pipe, and I'm pretty sure that's it.

BTW, I drive pretty normal too. Maybe one WOT for each tank.

but short trips do hurt a lot.. also depending on your total miles, it could be o2 sensors affecting it as well

I want to hear from some more Neuspeed Chippers. It obviously makes you run rich since I can shoot flames. So Neuspeeders, speak up!

    I get about 300miles/tank. I drive mostly in the suburbs/// 30% hwy.
Maybe thats because of your wheels???
And aslo, maybe i just started driving slower, BUT, after i erased the history of throttle body, my shifts are much smoother and it seems like im getting better gas mileage... Or it has something to do with hot wheather.

using ac and short trips where your motor never gets up to temp KILL gas mileage. Especially if you have to stop at a couple lights. I could get 300 per tank all city driving with the ac on. 350 miles with the ac off. same streets to and from work. I roll windows down unless its over 90*

Re: It seems like everyone gets better gas mileage than me

Some observations from my own experiences:

    1. BOV will eat gas, probably because of all that unmetered air, not getting back into the intake track. The car tends to run richer than with a DV setup.
    2. Free flowing air filters, 'seem' to eat more gas. Stock airbox gives me the best mpg.
    3. mufflers make a huge difference. on the same note, running cat-less will most likely eat gas, probably because the exhaust gases from the manifold pass with much less restriction through the turbo as compared to a setup using a Cat.
    4. Weight. I have a sound system in my car, a heavy ass one at that. I dropped 2-3 MPG depending on driving conditions just because of the system.
    5. Rims do make a difference. On 17s, I had the best MPG. 19s are no good on gas.
    6. FMIC has decreased my MPG. Even though it was designed to has as little pressure drop as possible, I did notice a slight drop after I installed.
    7. Sludge?

So here are some solutions that i have followed:

    1. i got a foam air filter from JC Whitney. This fit inside stock airbox. MPG improved and I felt more power as compared to stock.
    2. If you can run a HFC, that's a good option because a little of airflow restriction may go a long way to create some backpressure for your engine/turbo. Especially from dead stops, you may n ot notice it, but It seems the engine will overcompensate for the lack of backpressure to car going from a deadstop. If you help it out a litttle with a HFC, you should see an improvement in MPG.
    3. SEAFOAM is your friend. Use it to Clean your injectors and fuel system. Use it in the crankcase (sludge?), and finally in the intake manifold (vacuum track).
    4. Unload your car of unnecessary equipment, junk.
    5. Depending on what body kit you have, you may want to get one with less of a "snow-plow" bottom valence. My Reiger creates massive wind resistance. I noticed this right after I put it on. It creates more Down force, but probably at the expense of creating more drag as well.

Anyway, that's what comes off the top of my head at the moment.

    Happy Tuning.
    Z out.

    LOL, whats the record???

BTW, my friend installed headers on his e90 330i, according to his computer, he used to get about 19.8mpg, now if he drives normally on a hwy, he gets about 25 mpg... So i would say +1 on a HFC/TestPipe.

On my tank? That's the least I've gotten, it should be about 300 even with a built motor and BAT. I don't pound on it that much. I think when REVO flashed my ECM they put in the wrong file. I'll be shipping it back to them on Monday.

Re: It seems like everyone gets better gas mileage than me

Neuspeed flashed, K&N drop in filter, dv, 17" stock wheels - I'm averaging 350-375 miles per tank. That's with probably 65/35 city/highway. The best I've gotten is around 525 mostly highway.

What I've noticed is that the "miles remaining meter" in the cluster is a bit off. When the meter says you have 0 miles left, you actually have a some gas left in the tank. The gas meter on the right of the cluster is a little misleading as well - when the gauge hits the red empty line, it can actually go a couple more millimeters until actual empty. Furthermore, when the cluster beeps alerting you to refuel, you actually have about 2.4 gallons left in the tank (from the manual) - which will give you around another 50 miles or so.

Check your manual to confirm all this. Hope this helps.

I believe it is probably due to the test pipe. Without a cat, and the compromised O2 sensor calibration, the fuel mixture is likely richer overall than it would be normally.

Re: It seems like everyone gets better gas mileage than me

Remember that a high powered sound system, especially if turned up to an effective volume, loads the engine more due to the power required to drive the alternator that provides the watts used by the system. It's just a higher auxiliary load that requires more fuel to operate. Plus the extra fuel used to haul the extra mass around, as you already mentioned. I bet the higher electrical load is equal to, or more than the weight regarding increased fuel consumption.

I fear i've been going too heavy on the gas lately so when I filled up yesterday I reset the trip meter and now we'll see how many miles per tank I get. I never wait to fill up when its on red, I always usually refill with 60-70 miles left. That lasts me a week.

i was thinking one day. is it smarter to not fill up. like get only half a tank. that way you car carrying around less gas. haha. idk if it would make a differnce, i meant just the drive to the gas station more often might offset that...

your 20" wheels are so heavy I bet each of them is like 35lbs plus tire weight that's like a total of 60lbs at each corner. that kills gas mileage
