The best gas stations for your 1.8t.

    Summary

So after doing some extensive research on our cars, i've tested the difference between stock and apr 1+ between multiple gas stations, and the results quite frankly aren't that impressive in terms of how many miles i got to a tank. I tried to drive as consistent as possible, albeit, I am human, so results are only reflective to me, and probably not the entire crowd on Az. So just use this as a reference, and not a flame war because I know there are many variables including, temperature, the way i drive, traffic, etc etc. My mods are just basically exhaust, intake, and apr 1+, so the difference is only switching the chips on and off. Therefore stock isn't 100% stock, if you are interested in my mod list, go to my profile. So here are the results of driving approx 70% and 30% local, and when the gas light turned ON.

    Results

    Sunoco 94 Stockish 290 APR 1+299

    Shell Stockish 331 APR 1+354

    Mobil Stockish 319 APR 1+331

    Costco Stockish 329 APR 1+347

    Driving Style

The driving style that i did during the freeway averaged according to the on board computer on the freeway was 76.2 and I stayed in vacuum i would say 90% of the time, since i do have to merge onto the freeway, pass slow grandma buick drivers, etc. But in town, I tried to keep aggressive acceleration to a minimal.

    Conclusion

I think its safe to assume that if driven correctly, APR actually improves your miles to the tank, especially if you have more freeway trips. My car is a 2004 a4 1.8t quattro trashtronic with approx 85k miles, running on total (elf) motor oil changed every 5k. Correct tire pressures, plugs are new, intake is cleaned. Basically all the preventative measures of getting better gas mileage, i have done. Although one thing that worrys me is in stock mode, with the tt225 injectors, am I really maximizing the fuel used? That I will let some of the experts here chime in.

vince, that's very good mileage for your car. acutally my 3.0 gets better mileage than you with 90%highway(55mph-75mph) and 10% city.

Good Experiment. Your total miles per tank seem odd to me, though. My trip calculator is at 280 miles right now (since I last filled up) and the readout on the dash says that I have 140 miles till empty (granted that thing is obviously not accurate). I'm sure that I can get at least 350 miles out of the tank (stock drivetrain 02' 1.8T quattro sport 5speed w/90k).

Does the manual vs. tip/auto make that much of a difference?

Re: The best gas stations for your 1.8t.

We don't have chevron here in Michigan, and I don't know how big of a difference there is between a manual and tiptronic. I would imagine there is a pretty big difference for obvious reasons like weight, control of what gear (except I am always in tip mode), or MAYBE being a tiptronic car, we all know the tip transmission robs the car of power therefore equating to more resistance and worse fuel mileage? Thats a total guess.

I personally don't use the trip computer for miles till empty since I never used a vag com to correct the settings after getting bigger injectors.

Manual vs. TIP/Auto does make a huge difference. To me that's saying a V8 gets better gas mileage than a 4 cyclinder although that is exaggerated a little ;). I don't know all the technical terms why that is but I drove my dad's 350z 6spd which has a v6 and and that was getting close to the same gas mileage as my 5 speed 4 cyclinder. Both running on V-power fyi. Automatics tend to eat gas up more but I can't really tell you why. Maybe someone else can clarify this.

From my experience... On my local Mobil Gas Staion their pumps work really slow... So it prolly takes twice as much time as on a different Station. And in 8 out of 10 times, i see that i get more mpg.
And i switched to ELF after my last oil change.

Re: The best gas stations for your 1.8t.

I think miles to the tank is a bad measurement unless we are sure the cars have the same size tanks. Also, you getting 350 to a tank instead of me getting 300 could be the difference of me not running mine until the gas light comes on, etc etc.

Not detracting from the thread at all, as your comparisons are all using the same tank, presumably driving until the same amount of fuel is left in the tank, and thus is more relevant.

Re: The best gas stations for your 1.8t.

Costco gave you the second best mileage and is consistenly cheaper (up to $0.20 a gallon) than the others.

I've been filling up at Costco for about a year now and get pretty good mileage (340-400 depending on how much highway driving). And it's cheaper! This past weekend I filled up for $4.18 a gallon for 91 when the Mobil up the street was charging $4.37. A savings like that is on the high side, but I'd say I consistently fill up for $.08-$.10 less per gallon.

Re: The best gas stations for your 1.8t.

The TT 225 injectors are able to operate with lower duty cycle percentages in pseudo stock mode without issues. After all, the TT225 runs fine at low throttle opening angles, with the about same road load hp and torque at cruise as a stock AMB, right?

Bringing this back from the dead.

So even with a 2.0l GTRS elim turbo with all supporting mods on 550cc injectors along with a 01e manual swap, my mileage did NOT change much.

Mobil 1 Gas = 338.8 miles before the gas light came on. Shifting at 3k RPM and staying in vacuum, 70% freeway/30% local roads with one situation where I had to get into boost. This equates to roughly 24 mpg. So for the people that worry about gas mileage after a turbo upgrade....

The real question is, how the hell do some of you claim to get 400+ miles? Is it to a tank? or till the dash light comes on. Or is it pure cruise of 100% highway. Because I really don't think it's possible... Even for my 4 hour trip to Toronto, I barely broke 370-380 iirc.

the best my car has ever done was 380ish miles to a tank

this was on APR 1+ cruizing from Seattle to the Bay Area with three people and all their crap

I'd guess that if I had a lighter car and drove nicer I could have cracked 400 miles a tank, but under 12 hours from Kirkland WA to Sunnyvale CA made me a happy camper

PS - I normally get 280-300 before the gas light comes on

I'm with Vinny! After reading this I wanna cry...If I get 300 miles to a tank, I consider myself lucky. Should I be worried that something isn't right?

Like I said on Facebook, when I drove from Florida to Virginia with cruise control on around 75mph most of the time I got 450miles on my tank (this was running after the light had come on) and I put in around 17 gallons to fill it back up and doing the math with whatever the exact amount was gave me 27mpg, that is with how my car sits right now as for mods. That is with a B5 A4 5 speed transmission which has a little taller 4th and 5th gear so my rpms are slightly lower on the highway than stock tranny but I have got around 415 before on a highway trip with a B6 5 speed too and that was not driving as slow so it could have been very close to the same which at the time was with a gtrs turbo and the b6 tranny.

I average 20 mpg with my shitty Seattle ->Bellevue I-90 commute. I've got a 6MT APR Stg1. I would say its pretty typical for me to get anywhere from 300-320 miles on a tank. I try to stay out of heavy boost but merging and passing is an unfortunate necessity. I'd never thought to compare MPGs stock and stage 1, because I assumed they would be even at best. I wish I could do this sort of comparo, but my commute is consistently all over the place. it can take me anywhere from 25 minutes to an hour either way for no apparent reason. My best guess is that when Mt. Rainier is poking out people gawk at it and slow down because stupid seattle drivers are stupid...

Went for a long trip out the the Coast and around a few weekends ago in my GF's stock b7 avant and we averaged around 26-27 MPGs with a lot of hills, mainly highway and a few jaunts up to 110+ (sometimes you've just gotta pass all 5 cars in front of you you know?). That car is a 2.0 FSI with the 6-speed auto.

I am continually impressed with the efficiency of our engines. I get 25% better mileage in my 1.8t than I ever did in my parents 2004 Subaru Outback, which it put on a pedestal out here in Seattle because people think they are so green. But the Subie had a fucking hampster under the hood and made me want to shoot myself in the face repeatedly with its utter shittness. It is literally worse in EVERY RESPECT than the audi and yet has the same fucking blue book value. No idea why...

the most miles to tank I've ever achieved is 439.7 miles for 15.1 gallons. Fueled up in west yellowstone, drove around the park for 4 days, then headed south through west yellowstone and fueled up in rexburg, id.

not too bad for mixed "city" and highway, all high altitude. 3.0 6-speed manual with 163,000 miles on it.

I'm guessing the in-park 45mph max speed helped a lot.

I regularly drive from Denver to Salt Lake City and rarely ever get less than 450 miles per tank...I have broken 500 several times. The most I have ever filled up is 16.2 gallons.

That being said, around town (Boulder) I usually get 320-350 miles per tank.

I thought it was 16 as well...but I have definitely gone to 16.2. And someone one the first page said they have filled to 17. Where did you hear 18.5? With 18.5 gallons I think I could push 600 miles.

My g37 had a 20 gallon tank, but the Gas light would come on at 15 and then the DTE would read 0 at 16-17. So yea, I've driven for 3 days on empty in it before. Most I ever put in was 19 gallons. I really don't know what our tanks are like though. I usually put in 15 but I drive it past 0 for a while...

Verified via Audi Car Manual? I don't have mine...or I would check.

EDIT: FWD is 18.5 gallons. Quattro is NOT.

Maybe one of these days I'll just pull a Kramer and drive until it runs out. I'll be sure to post up my findings and the subsequent Fuel Pump replacement DIY

We should have a contest to see how close to empty we can get... Winner gets a free 5 Gal gas canister :-)

Also is says the reserve tanks is 2.1 Gal (of the total 17.4) so if you aren't putting in at least 15.3, you aren't trying

FML...I've been failing all this time. lol

I'm down for a contest. But lets up the ante.

But then we'd need some sort of proof, without cheaters...

I put 424 once and that was getting stuck in traffic. I put 435 on my B5 S4. That was getting stuck in traffic for over an hour. If I didn't get stuck I'm sure I could have gotten at least another 50 miles to the tank before I filled u. My S is a stage 2+ and my A4 is stage 1 but I have my chip off. Btw, all with Shell 93.

I still get 470-500 miles per tank.
