Custom Exhausts for the 2.7T. (not just another question about MagnaFlow)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I was talking to a friend who works a local exhaust shop last night and we came up with an idea: Manufacture custom, modular, pre-built exhausts for the A6.

    WHY?
    1. Its not that difficult.
    2. Companies are gouging the hell out of us for exhaust systems.
    3. Offer custom muffler options, with quick easy change out.
    4. You get to pick your sound and the look.

    MY THOUGHTS ON THE PRODUCT:
    1. The standard would be 2.5" stainless steel tubing.
    2. Clamp on after the cats, just the same as OEM.
    3. Choice of Mandrel bends or standard hydraulic.
    4. Modular system for cheaper shipping costs and allows for easy change out of rear muffler section and/or front section can be straight pipe or additional resonator.
    5. (Obviously) Use of original hangers.
    6. EASY customization. We all get to choose mufflers AND style of the tip.

So, its just an idea. Since I have a pre-face lift 2.7T, that would be the initial offering because the system can be test fit. I have a friend who has a post face-lift 2.7T as well, so we could test fit on his car to make sure the tips line-up cleanly.

I researched costs on this project, and it looks like it can be done for around $700 for stainless steel, Magnaflow straight thru design mufflers, mandrel bends, quad tips (most expensive), or for the really budget minded crowd, $400 using aluminized steel, standard bends, and down turned, unpolished tips.

A shorty version could be built for $275. What's the shorty version? This is what I have on my car right now. I'm using 2 magnaflow round canisters in place of the front resonator, with turned down tips that end right there.

    SO....I have some questions, too.

    1. For those of you who have already done this, did you have your shop use mandrel bends or just have them use flex joints, or standard bends, etc?

    2. Anyone have an idea about how much power is lost due to restriction at bends (standard bends)?

    3.Please post your input!!!!!

ONE LAST THING: Of course if this all happens, there will soon be a ton of info on how different sizes, shapes, and brands of mufflers sound on our cars.
That info will be shared freely so we can all get the sound we want out of our cars. OH, and lets not forget, horsepower increase!!

I think most local exhaust shops can do this for a pretty reasonable price so I personally don't see the value in this type of offering, but perhaps I don't fully understand the concept.

I actually thought that as well, and I wasn't even going to bother, but I want to get some ideas bouncing around.....

Like for instance, how much are people paying around the country for exhausts and exactly how are they being built? Mandrel bends? Stainless steel? Welded or clamped? If your shop was charging more, then you don't HAVE to go to them. When you sell your car, you can sell the exhaust. Because its sectional, its easy and inexpensive to ship.

ALso, for instance.... your exhaust set-up. Did you go with just the rear section or did you have your shop make a full cat-back? Is the OEM resonator still on your car? How much did it cost? I'm just trying to get ideas, and perhaps we all can get together and make a superior product.

It would be like most aftermarket exhausts (Miltek, Borla, APR, AWE). Comes in 2 or 3 sections. Rearward pipe expanded to slip on to the section in front of it. Then it can either be clamped or welded. Clamps would be included. This would be something you could install at home if you have some ramps.

I think I could keep ground shipping under $50.

my setup is stock except for mufflers and tips. To do wider piping from cats back was "a few hundred" plus the cost of the x-pipe. I do not know what type of bends were being used. I guess all-in for a custom magnaflow would have cost about $500-$600. Since I am not chipped yet and the perfromance improvement of an exhaust would be negliable, I opted to just do mufflers (got a good deal on them).

    Hope that helps.

Re: Custom Exhausts for the 2.7T. (not just another question about MagnaFlow)

i paid $350 for 2 magnaflow mufflers and $50 for a magnaflow x-pipe from a local parts store. then went to an exhaust shop and they charged me $400 for full cat-back mandrel bent pipe installed... so $800 in total for catback dual exhaust with exposed magnaflow mufflers... your $700 (w/out x-pipe?)cost + shipping is about the same....

Thanks for the info. I do have a question for you though. As I understand it, an X-pipe is needed in a restricted system to balance out back pressure so there is equal pressure on each bank (for max power, and smoothness). SO, why would there need to be an X-pipe in an unrestricted system?

Its seriously red. I really didn't like it at first but the car had 35,000 miles when I bought it. It has really grown on me though since the modding began.

So you're exhaust turns down somewhere near the back seat??? Isn't that loud, and possibly unhealthy? or is it just temporary?

Temporary. I was planning to do a Quad exhaust similar to Kievskiy. Except was goin to use satin SS mufflers with SS tips. I hadn't decided on tips so I just had the front half built. I used a pair of Magnaflow 4" round x 22" part number 10436 and turned down tips just tacked on.

I did this in March. Its sounds so good, I just haven't bothered doing the rest yet. I had plans to do it in the next few weeks, which is what sparked this thread. It would be so easy to take measurement of the pipes and duplicate it a few times if anyone were interested.

I just looked under there. It actually ends just in front of the rear axle. No noticable smell in the car, and no melted parts behind.

I wanted to make a note for anyone who's thinkin of this. a week before I had this done, I cut of the pipes just past the front muffler. The only change in sound was a slight low growl on acceleration and no noticeable power gain.

When I had the front muffler removed and replaced, I felt a slight power gain and the turbos seemed to spool quicker (less lag). This tells me that the front muffler creates a lot of restriction in the system.
