    1.9 TDI Discussion

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Just curious if anyone has done this. I know Greg mentioned it in another thread, and I have had a friend/mechanic suggest it as well.

Has anyone tried doing the 1.9 TDI long block and going to a 2.2 liter setup?

What all would you need for this? I know the fueling is obviously different so it makes me wonder how and what you would need to swap out on the head. I dont think the heads on the 1.8 would match the 1.9 TDI or be sufficient enough for the 2.2 conversion. But I am not sure.

Figured it would be nice and informative to open a thread up for discussion of this.

Might want to talk to the B5 guys, or even Issam.

Good luck finding a block for a reasonable price...

You'd pretty much need to a complete drivetrain replacement. The gearing in the gas-powered models is too high for the low-revving TDI's. Not to mention the fueling system, ECU and all other components. Basically, you'd need a fill donor car.

I believe he's saying he'd use the block and lower rotating assembly from a 1.9TDI and using a 5 valve head. I also believe he's looking for a way to build a bigger "1.8t" than the 1.9 and 2.0 builds than have sprung up lately.

Exactly!! I was thinking block and head.. bored out to a 2.2 With a MUCH BIGGER turbo

Just not sure if the engine would bolt up.. what you would need for the fueling system etc.

I would think that the driveline would hold up.. I mean heck, if it can hold up to the bigger power of the 2.0 BAT builds.. then it "should" be able to hold up to a 2.2 bigger turbo build. Just that the block being bigger on the 1.9 would be more suitable for bigger displacement. I am not sure though if the 1.9 head would flow more.. or if the 1.8 head would even bolt up to the 1.9 block

    exactly what I'm wondering..

Reading other posts show that even the crank from a Automatic 1.8T to a Manual 1.8T is different.. so who knows.

    Re: 1.9 TDI Discussion

    Well consider this.

The VW'ers use the 1.9 crank in the 2.0 ABA and use a 16 valve head.

we'd have to be 1.9 crank in the 1.8 block with 20 valve head only if the 1.9 block woudn't work for some reason.

    Re: 1.9 TDI Discussion

the main reason I am wondering this is to go to a 2.2L setup where as the 1.8 block is pushed to its size limits (safely) when bored out to a 2.0 .. so we could get more displacement with a 1.9 block to start out with.

Now granted, if this does work, it might be cheaper easier instead of building the engine to a 2.0 to do a 1.9

I am not a mechanical engineer by any means and don't possess a lot of knowledge when it comes to these things. So this is all just kinda thoughts and speculations.

    Re: 1.9 TDI Discussion

Eurospec sells a 2.2. It uses a 1.9L TDI block with 100mm rods IIRC. A 2.2L would be $ with a 35r. It's 16mm taller then a 1.8L block but they say everything bolts up without issue. If I were to do it again, I would have had David build me one.

I figured if we could get a thread going with enough discussion/details about it that it could be a possibility for others as well. Kinda like an alternative to the 2.0 Stroker

I just got off the phone with David and he said the longer stroke of the 2.2 really kills the ability to rev. the motor and suggests just building a high revving 2.0. But said if you want it, he will build it, price was not discussed.

Hey man you can make a 2.1 with a TDI crank and custom pistons. You would keep your block though, might want to do that instead, youd save a lot of $$

95.5mm crank in the 220mm block produces a 1.50 rod ratio.Too small for what he wants to do.
