So this icon shows up for about 1 second in the instrument cluster with a beep while driving .
it happens randomly every 2-3 days.

The key to unraveling such mysteries is to open the... manual.

combed the manual couple of times but did not find the icon, so my plan B is to ask AZ'ers

It's the dipped headlight warning as mentioned above. I get it occasionally as well, although it hasn’t pissed me off enough to worry about it yet.

Same here, dealer told me i need a new rear view mirror... 1200...no thanks, i can handle that light once a week. there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. Dealer also said that there is a service bulletin on the rear view mirrors, the software was written incorrectly for the rear view mirror, so the computer thinks the headlights are out of alignment. the light is called "adaptive headlamp warning"

    Re: Mysterious icon in cluster

The weird part is I have that light about once a month. I've had it since I did the clear corner mod... But I turns on for a sec and then goes away so i dont really care... I was told though that it meant the Gas cap was dead but now I know it means my head lights are outta sync. I get it to turn on mainly when im turning like 90 degrees at like 5-10mph and the moment i straighten the wheel out it disappears lol....

That is because the sensors on your suspension need adjustement.

Either the suspension sensors need to be recalibrated, or there is a loose connection in the auto leveling or headlight power wiring somewhare.

A new rear view mirror with autodimming and compass does not cost $1200. They go for less than $300. Even if that included installation, that only takes a tech about a half hour. You can get a used mirrior and replace the faulty mirror yourself for lots less.

I have never seen a TSB on rear view mirror software, besides, B6 A4s do not have adaptive lighting, the dealership that said that is poorly informed.

Where is it that we can find auto-dimming mirrors for < $300?

Do they do work in cars that came without the dimming mirror/Xenons?

    Re: Mysterious icon in cluster

There are two headlight indicators that look very similar. That indicator may also mean that the light sensor in your mirror (the sensor that faces the windshield) is going bad. Those sensors are crap. My mirror was replaced twice in 9 months. Do you use the "auto" function on your headlight switch? stop it if you do, because you are relying on that sensor to turn you headlights on and off, and some kind of short occurs in that sensor.

My comment refers to the interior auto dimming mirror. And yes, they will work as retro fits for A4s that did not have it factory fitted. The auto dimming mirrors do not have any functional dependency on the existence of xenon headlights, they are totally independent of each other.

Achtuning.com usually has the dimming mirrors available, and can be found on eBay also.

    For example:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2001-...mZ220246490393

The above is an A6 part, but fits the A4 also.
