Magnaflow exhaust done today, results and tips

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey all. Just had my exhaust done today and I am VERY happy! I achieved what I wanted to and then some.. Some tips I would share with those looking to do so, with similar objective to me.

    Setup-
    Dual 2.5" all the way
    Piggies (gutted pre cats)
    No main cats
    2.5" stainless X pipe
    Magnaflow 4" round, 18" long resonators (2)
Magnaflow 5x8 oval, 18" long rear muffs (2)

I went with longer mufflers to eliminate rasp and keep as quiet as possible, since I have no cats. I wanted a sleeper and I have a 2001 so my tips are hidden and stayed that way. And since they are straight through mufflers, they don't exactly add restriction. The one thing I would have changed is the config of the rear mufflers. I got offset/offset and I should have done offset/center so the rear exit was centered easier to the turn down openings. We still got it to work fine but the center would have been easier.

Sound wise- Amazing! Still very quiet, but definitely not stock. I always felt the A6 2.7T was way too quiet stock because you hear nothing at all. References I would make is- Its a little louder than a new 335i stock, but not as loud as a G35 coupe stock. When you get on it, it gets louder, but still very humble and far from a cop magnet. I just think it sounds more refined and more sports sedan now. Because if you look at things like E55 AMG, 550i, M5, etc, they all have some exhaust sound but not loud. Its in that league now. Yet at cruising, you would barely notice it at all. And my favorite, is that at idle, a simple blip of the throttle lets you hear the K04s whistle a little tune.. So sweet.. And I have a modified stock air box with K&N, so not even an open intake...

So I am definitely happy :)

I will try to borrow a camera to do some videos for youtube.

Thats the beauty :) With the hidden tips you see nothing at all! Even with polished stainless mufflers. I took some camera phone pics of the X pipe I will upload later on...

Similar setup on my stage 3 allroad -- similar results. Not too loud, but sounds about like a car with some balls should sound.

Paul, tips are 35164 (4" weld on double-wall angle cut), not sure about the resonators and mufflers.

Love it! Feels amazing! K04s, HUGE IPP intercoolers, custom SSP tune, 23psi and not a single restriction in my exhaust! I don't have a video camera so I will have to find a way to get clips. Just drove home with windows closed and you'd never know I had anything done when cruising @ 80 or so...

Similar.. Nice setup! Looks like you still have cats tho. I can say that removing them was one of my favorite things after going to K04s. And your round mufflers are likely a little louder than mine. Magnaflow said the ovals were quieter than 6" rounds. And my mufflers are 18" long, yours look 14". The 18s also result in quieter. Overall, thats a really nice setup. I kept mine stealth tho..

Tried to do a video with my regular digital camera. Video part looks good but the sound wasnt so good. The mic on it doesn't go deep enough so all you heard was turbo whistle. Not a bad thing, but didn't do justice.. Will see if I can get some footage..

Dont sweat it. We have VERY durable motors.. Its the K03s that suck. I did my swap @ exactly 100,041 miles. You will be VERY happy you did! Make sure you do all supporting mods too and get a good custom tune. Mods I did-

    K04s
IPP XL intercoolers (bigger than RS4)
    620cc injectors
    RS4 inlet pipes
    034 mounts, all of them
    CM Stg 3 Kevlar clutch
Vast electric fan (VERY worth it)
    Piggies
    No cats
    Exhaust shown above
    85mm MAF

And you will also want to modify the front grilles by the i/c's for better flow and definitely ditch your fog lights cause they block the whole thing. I also cut vents in the plastic fender liners.

Yeah, I can see that. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't just the 100k on the clock stopping you.. I can say I thoroughly beat a new C6 (non Z06) Vette the other day on the highway 3x in a row. A nice feeling for a car that looks & sounds like nothing.. And we still have a little fine tuning to do so we can possibly squeeze a little more out of her. And I am also going to be adding methanol injection to drop the intake temps and add a few psi.. The car is now absolutely amazing...

I noticed that you removed the center muffler box as well and relaced it with what looks to be two separate mufflers, are they mufflers and are they needed? I would think an Xpipe would be better there, no? I am in the process of doing my magnaflow exhaust now and I just want to be sure I do everything correct. Any other feedback would be greatly appreciated, thanx.

I did indeed replace the center box (which contains the stock resonators) and added two independent resonators (that's what the smaller mid-mufflers are) -- but what you can just barely see is that there IS an x-pipe way up in front as well.

So my setup includes 2.5" stainless pipes (not mandrel bent, as it's really a waste on a setup with such minimal bends), an x-pipe, dual resonators, and dual mufflers, topped off with 4-inch tips. As an update on the sound -- it's still nice and mellow, but gets growly and mean under load. And when putting around town with the family it's nice and quiet. In all, I'm extremely pleased with how the magaflow setup turned out.

    Here's a pic:

Did you engineer this yourself and purchase compnents from Magnaflow? I thought there were no Magnaflow systems for A6....

I had an exhaust shop do it for me -- they did fantastic work. Cost about $950 all told, a good bit cheaper than any Milltek or APR "kit."

Mine also has an X pipe, where the main cats used to be. Then 4" rounds to replace center box, then the ovals @ the rear. More update on sound- After break in it got a little deeper and sounds even nicer. Ak Greg from SSP, he was in my car the other night, and with windows closed you don't hear a thing at cruising, no drone at all! Yet when I opened it up & hit boost under a nice big highway overpass it sounded like a tuned supercar!!

I really could not be happier with it! Magnaflow is definitely the way to go. Choose muffler size & config based on how loud you want it..

100% agreed. Mine has mellowed and gotten a bit deeper since install, and is nearly silent at highway speeds while sounding like a Ferrari when I'm really wailing on it. I find myself downshifting and rev-matching at every opportunity now just to hear the over-run

Great job on the exhaust, all around a C5 to be envious of, a true sleeper
