It all depends on what you want to do with it. Do you want to read codes, play around with modules, do live tests?? If all you want is codes than cheap scanner is fine, but if youre looking to do that and more, invest in a vagcom.

A generic code reader itself is useless, even if its 50 dollars. I would spend a bit more for a Vag com unit or if your just needed a pc based scanner auto enginuity is pretty good for all around obdII pc scantool. Thats just my 2 cents....

I bought the $7. Use Vag-Com with it. Does everything I need it to. I do have the full version of Vag-Com though.

ebay vag-com = PITA. yu still have to buy the registration from VAG-COM to do anything and everytime you do anything on your computer (such as defragment or system clean up), you have to get a new verification number for the "dumb" ebay dongle to work. It's worth the aggrevation to go with Ross-Tech's any day of the week. I'm actually going to order ross-tech's newest dongle because i'm tired of having to wait for a new code whenever i need to use the dongle.

Funny I haven't had a single problem with 9 months of use.
I do everything from log to scan to change modules.
