Wouldn't it be easier to buy a black rear view mirror that's meant for the titanium package equipped B7? unless of course they are a ridiculously expensive part.

I was nervous for quite a while as well.

No it's not that hard, but I was able to practice using my old halogens.
I didn't like banging the amber out like some other people. So I ended up very very very very carefully cutting into the amber using some side cutters. You just want to be careful not to touch the reflective plastic with anything because you can scratch or even dent it will tools very very easily. Once I had a big hole cut out of the amber it was very flexible and much easier to remove IMO. I had also thought about drilling it out some how but my drill was elsewhere. Just be careful and you'll be okay.

It rained that night after reinstallation, then I washed last night, and no condensation.

I checked VAG parts and all I found was an almost $500 compass mirror.
Nothing on ECS so far.

try to see if a GTi rear view would work, or paint it

Actually, the rear view mirro is expensive but not that steep. The company that makes them is called Gentex and the sell for about $200 or something like that. A little cheaper for the one w/out the compass. Hope this helps:

If you do replace your rearview, be prepared for it to come unglued after a little while, Mines fallen off twice since I replaced my windshield. Not a big deal, just fyi. Car looks awesome btw!
