Hey guys, i love my car but really looking for a 6 speed. What do you guys think about me trading my A4 for a B6 S4? My car is in perfect shape and nicely modded but i think the S4 might be a little more fun to drive. Let me here some opinions.

did the FMIC put you over the edge?

my guess would say no because you put so much money into your car, but if you were gonna get a 6spd why wouldn't you trade for a b7 6spd or wait for the b8's?

I really want a V8 because by the time i get older V8's maybe gone and this maybe my only opportunity now that i dont have a house and family to support.

definently not, B6 would be a straight out trade with no money out of my pocket.

Re: Thinking of trading my car for a B6 S4 with an Exhaust and Intake.

I say do it. Sounds like you are really thinking about it so if you don't, you will always wonder, what if...am I right?

Take it out for a spin and see for yourself. I am very glad I had the chance to have one for almost 3 years. I got it out of my system and now back to reality.

You will notice over time that its more nose heavy than the B7 A4. The B7 chassis seems a little more poised overall so you may feel that too. The S4 is stiff out of the box but not bad. LOVE the seats. The clutch is very tricky and even experienced drivers had trouble with smooth 1-2 shifts (search the forums and you'll see what I mean). I got it down in about 2 weeks though.

The torque, oh the torque. And the sound of that V8...thats what sealed the deal for me when I test drove it while I still had my 1.8T. But there is a penalty for that smooth buttery V8 torque...bad fuel economy. In stop and go pure city driving you will only get 13-14mpg. All highway is a little better with up to 24mpg if you take it easy (like under 70). If I can think of anything else I'll reply again.

Re: Thinking of trading my car for a B6 S4 with an Exhaust and Intake.

I'd say wait one year or less for the prices of the B7 S4 to drop a little more and see if you can get it then. With the B8 coming out, the B6's will look even more dated than it does now. The V8 is definitely orgasmic day-to-day, but after driving it around for awhile you will still have that feeling of wanting more... with the V8 there is not much "more" in terms of mods, so your mod itch will only be satisfied with minor performance gains. Although, there is a supercharger kit that I heard was coming out so... that might be a monster. Also the B7 has the DTM kit, which makes the B6 look like a baseline A4 imho.

Fuel economy is a big factor nowadays. I get 17mpg average. Filling up with premium costs me $140 a week, since I drive around Los Angeles allot. I mostly skip 3rd and 5th gears to get that kind of mileage too.

Gas isnt getting cheaper, and the B6 is going to look more dated once the new B8s roll out.

I'd stay in your car for now, and maybe see if you can get a deal for a b7 down the line.

Is the B6 low mileage? 04 early builds have some bugs. 05 you are in the clear. I still say get it, keep it for a couple of years while the B8 bugs are worked out. Despite the fact that its cool to have the first out, no matter what there will always be bugs.

its warrantied if its bone stock, which its not. audi will find a reason, trust me. i think both engines have equal reliability. my car is a 6spd, don't know about his, and as for the v8, that's one of the cons with respect to gas mileage. as for the badge, that's just egotistical, i don't have any badges so any potential candidates are surprised and not scared away ;)

Re: Thinking of trading my car for a B6 S4 with an Exhaust and Intake.

based on the OP's sig, I don't think warranty is an issue here. But good point on whether the S4 is warrantied or not since it has mods on it - Audi won't CPO it if its modified.

Not if the A4 has an upgraded turbo, increased boost and timing.

Yeah that vid/comparison is cool for 2006 but now that they redid the M3 and boosted it from 386 HP to about 415 CHP, the S4's didn't even get a look when they wanted to compare it to something.

I wish Audi would step up its game and go big time performance with all S's and kill even bigger with the RS's

Dooooo it! I drove a B6 S4, it was the car that got me into the Audi dealership. (Literally drove straight there from driving an 07 STI). Unfortunately, insurance and a few other circumstances left me in a B7 A4... Between trading two pedals for three and getting that caliber of a car, it's a no brainer. S4 "FTW".

Have you guys seen all the stuff he has in his car!?!? It makes no sense whatsoever to switch after all the money/time/effort put in. Gas prices are sky-rocketing and on top of that, the V8 is the most non-tuner friendly engine in the world. Plus... Because of his young age the insurance will be ridiculous in an S4. He should just wait and in the future get a BT kit and upgrades for his transmission... but then again... thats just my opinion... Good luck with your decision though!

i test drove a b6 s4....it had a full milltek exhuast, chip and headers. It was a quick little car. But for some reason i didnt like it. The exhuast note was fing awsome, for me i rather have the availibility to slap on a large turbo down the road without really sacraficing mpg's. Seeing gas is just getting more expensive the v8 you will be in the mid-low 20's mpg on highway. I like the 2.0t, i would recommend you take your mods off and trade it in for a 6spd.

You know what the problem is, my car is becoming a complete and total money pit, and after all of have done its still not any quicker than an S4. The only thing left for me to do is a Big Turbo Kit and a tranny upgrade and at that point im out another 10k. I have always wanted a 6 speed V8 and im afraid i will regret this down the road. I really am not sure what to do.

This could be a good solution... if gas isn't an issue... and insurance isn't an issue... wait for now and buy your dad's RS4 when he gets rid of it...

The insurance is almost the same as my A4 only a couple dollars different believe it or not. I figured now that im young and don't have a house or family to support this maybe my opportunity to own a fast V8. Also like you said in the future if my dad gets rid of his RS4 i could buy that off of him if im financially set. Anyways the college im planing on going to is about 25 minutes from home all parkway so whats the difference between 22mpg and 28mpg

Re: Thinking of trading my car for a B6 S4 with an Exhaust and Intake.

Thats very true... but you won't get 22mpgs in an S4. We owned a 05 S4 6-speed w/intake and full milltek and the best we could ever get out of it was 18 when my mom drove it (slow driver) I usually averaged around 16mpgs. Are they giving you a straight swap for your car? Warranty?

thats a tough one dude... Now that you've had input for everyone on both forums, you should sit down, list the pros and cons for each car, compare and then make your personal decision. Oh an of course, if you do get the S4 make sure you get it fully inspected at a respected tuner shop before you do the switch

Even though I posted the above and stand by it, I vote S4 given your particular needs/wants and circumstances. Go for it!

    Eh?

Re: Thinking of trading my car for a B6 S4 with an Exhaust and Intake.

why not a B7 A4 2.0T Quattro 6spd Stage II+? With a V8, you will spend a lot of time filling up at gas stations.

I think one additional thing to consider is that you're saying that you don't mind wasting money on the gas/insurance, etc b/c you're young and live at home. That's a short sighted statement.

If the cash is burning a hole in your pocket, drop it into the bank or another investment vehicle (not automobile). Then, when it comes time to purchase your own place, or if you want to start a family, you wont have to worry about trying to unload an 15mpg sports car when gas is $6/gallon.

    Something to think about.

You can really tell the age difference between those who've been around the block and those who have not

To the OP, sit on this for a bit and make sure it's not just a short-sighted desire that will fade with time. You will get hit extra hard if you get tired of the S4 a year out and want to unload a B6 into a B8 introduced market dealing with potential $4.5-$5 gas. It's sad seeing the average joe trying to unload his or her SUV/truck at this time... you just get killed.

Living at home and being young is terrible reasoning.

Re: Thinking of trading my car for a B6 S4 with an Exhaust and Intake.

if youre young an in college then i think its dumb to get an s4. you are looking at higher insurance, gas, and maintenance costs. once you mod the s4 and the warranty is gone, prepare to spend some loot keeping it up. the s4 is unimpressive with its torque. sh*t you probably put down more torque in your car with all those mods and barring some big $ mods, the s4 will not increase in torque too much via aftermarket parts. the manual trans seems to be your big trading point, so why not trade in for a B8 a4 with stickshift? the b8's are hot and will be mod friendly and youll save money via cost-to-own expenses. if your dad has an rs4 then why not offer to fill up his tank once in a while if he lets you drive it a bit? that should relieve your manual transmission anxiety.
