Reverse goes forward now??

So I just put in my new JHM shortshifter, and I followed the online video step by step. I got everything assembled, and all the gears go smoothly. But when I started it up to go test drive it, I went to back out of the garage, stuck it in reverse and it started rolling forward. Took it out, tried again, same thing. So basically every gear INCLUDING reverse goes forward now. Please help.

that what I said. But yeah, I went through every gear, one by one, and all of them, including reverse goes forward. It worked fine before I took it out to re adjust it and tighten all the bolts up, so idk what could have happened between then....

Did you align it properly. The front of the linkage should be 1.5" from the front of the gearbox. Look in a Bentley, says it right there. Also, you didn't mess with the linkage did you? Because this happened to me, found out the wrong bolt was in there.

yeah but its the upgrade to non-pushdown. Like I said, I installed it, took it for a drive and it worked, just a little notchy, so I took it all apart again, and re adjusted it, and now no reverse.

I didn;t mess with anything. I put everything back just how it was, and it all went in without a problem

so originally your car was push down and you did an upgrade to non push down?

Don't you need to get the pushdown shifter? I wasn't aware you could remove that feature.

Not on a B5 A4. It's in the regular 5 speed position. Bottom right.

ok, now its fixed?? I went and started the car again, and tried one last time, and it works now. I went to shift it into reverse, and I gave it a nice tug, and I hear a loud clank noise inside the shaft, and now it works. Something must have been out of alignment...


Now I feel gay for making a worthless thread. Thanks for the help though guys.

i think you didn't align it properly and your not getting reverse because your hitting the sides, iirc thats the problem i had except with 1st gear. try repositioning the shifter. forward or backwards

You didn't align it properly. Reverse was not going forward, you were most likely going into 4th gear because it was hitting the wall...

You have to get the shifter sitting straight up and down and then tighten down the linkage. If you tighten down the linkage when the shifter is slightly tilting to the side you will not have all the gears. It may explain why it feels notchy too. Watch the videos again.

you prob got the angles wrong. if you watch the video, the guys uses like a protractor kind of thing to get the angle aligned back up. good luck brah

Does it move forward the same as going into 4th? because thats what your doing... You need to readjust.
