    04 S4 Oil Consumption

    Hey Guys-
First time poster on this forum but long time member of various BMW forums. I sold my 04 530iA Sport and bought my 2004 S4 manual about 1 year ago and have never looked back.

My question is in regards to some information my local Audi dealer recently provided me about oil consumption in the V8 engine. About 5000 miles after I bought the car I had an oil level warning light come on and needed to add about 2 qts of oil to the engine. My car is both CPO and extended service, so I took it into my local dealer to ask if the consumption is normal. My previous experience with oil consumption is that it's usually related to a faulty seal or hose which permits oil into the engine or leak out of the system.

To make a long story short, the dealer told me to expect 1qt of oil consumption every 1000 miles and that the car was fine. I was honestly shocked by this statement. That would equate to the consumption of more oil then the car can hold in-between scheduled 10k mile service appointments.

I was just gonna stick w/ the already-paid-for oil changes, but knowing now that the oil will need to be constantly "topped off" I am thinking of changing at 5000 intervals.

Does anybody else notice their S4 consuming oil?

    Thanks,
    Z

This is normal and there is more than one thread addressing this very issue.

Welcome and I think this is a failry common issue. However, I have not had this problem (57K miles), but understand it does exist. From what I hear folks say is to carry an extra couple of quarts and monitor it regularly. I don't recall the consumption rate, i.e. one quart every 1,000 miles, but a quick search might reveal more information. Good luck and don't sweat it.

Are the people that experience this running the 0-40 recommended by Audi?

oil consumption is normal, but so are leaky valve cover gaskets. get under the car and take a look at the aero pan... if there's fresh oil on the pan you've got a leak.

Thanks for the quick feedback guys, nice to finally find an Audi forum that's active!

I'll check out the VCG as recommended but I would hope the dealer would have identified a seal leak considering the car is still under base warranty & CPO warranty. Looks like the 2qts I've been keeping in my trunk will be staying there.

I have read that it is OK to mix brands of Synthetic as long as the weight is the same.

My dealer fills her up with Castrol Syntec can I top off with Mobil 1 until my next change?
