    which engine size?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So this seems like a pretty general question, but suprisingly I couldn't find the answer after searching (maybe i just did a bad job).

basically, I am wondering which engine (1.8t or the 3.0) do most people perfer and why? both engines would be with a manual. it seems like the 3.0 has a little better straight line performance, but does the 1.8 out handle it due to the lighter engine?

also, modifications aren't really a huge issue, because I am looking at a4's that still have a decent amount of warranty left.

Thanks in advance, and sorry if this has been brought up 1000 times already.

    Re: which engine size?

if you arent looking to mod much, the 3.0 is on par with the 1.8. you will definitely see better mileage with a smaller engine, however the extra stock ponies, six speed, and great tone of a 3.0 may be worth it. maintenence it about the same, for the most part. haha. sounds like both are a good option for you. just think, slower smaller more mod'able engine with better mpg, or quicker bigger n/a engine with less mpg.

the 3.0 does offer upgraded gadgets too, dual power with memory, six speed, steering wheel mounted stereo controls. just various luxuries not found on a 1.8.

    Re: which engine size?

Most people on this forum prefer the 1.8 over 3.0 due to the ability to modify the engine more. As for the handling, I dont think either is a hole heck of alot better when it comes to handling but thats just me. Just find one that you like and if it happens to be a 1.8T just spend the extra 800-1k for chip and injectors and you should be around comparable power.

If I were you, I would read over the sticky noob threads at the top of the forum for further mod and engine info.

    Re: which engine size?

The 3.0 is definitely something different than what everyone else has. So if you want to do something different than the 3.0 is ur answer. I don't know your financial situation but with gas prices skyrocketing I'd go with the 1.8T.

3.0, the engine might have less maintenance.

No modding, decent power (just be warned, you are going to be itching for more power when you see a 1.8T roll up on you and beat you)

    Re: which engine size?

As mentioned by turboquattropwr with a few "cheap" mods you will get similare to same performance out of both cars.

However the way they archive this can't be any different.
    1.8T
    better gasmileage (22-33mpg)
    risk of oil sluge
agressive pull when turbo kicks in at 2000rpm
needs to work hard to get the power (high reving)

    3.0
    ok gas mileage (18-27mpg)
    very reliable, bullet proof engine
Some potential oil loss (cam shaft seals or valve cover - minor only, but I believe Audi never was able to build a 6 cylinder without lossing some oil somewhere)
Sweet torque curve, power is constance (2200- 5000 rpm flat)
    Sweet sound
    no mods or very expensive

    Difference:
The 1.8T even slower stock, feels much sportier and lighter when driving. Sure makes the most fun when driving in the turbo range, what means higher revs. As for the 3.0 the power comes even at low revs. I rarly have the need to rev it up higher than 4K.
However keep in mind that the 1.8T gives you a chance to limit your gas comsumption, as for the 3.0 it just needs it.

    as for both:
    Make sure it's quattro
Make sure it's a sport suspension
And some 2002 3.0 came without the Multifunction steering wheel and memory seats?mirrors.

    Hope this helps you,
    Tom

I would just spend an extra $2000 or so and get a 2.0T IMO
