What would you do?? Problem with a sale from another member?

    Curious as to your opinion's..

I sold an ECU to a guy on the forums. Apr single program.

I never had a problem with it, no check engine light.. Pulled smooth and hard.

He said he got a CEL and it read multiple misfire. My original assumption was that the increased fuel/boost etc. could of just made a small previous problem appear..

He now just sent me another PM saying that hes getting a code for memory module as a bad ECU. Diffrent from the code he originaly said was?

What would you do? Im not going to give a name because the guy is being pretty cool about it.. Im just trying to be fair.

Possibly file a claim with ups? doubt it could be damaged during shipping, but worth a try.

Did he do a throttle body adaptation?

Try the ECU in another car? I'd do a little more troubleshooting.

I had the same issue when I bought a used APR ECU. It was my car at fault, multiple misfires and a huge boost leak. I did the adaptation, found my leaks and all was good. I doubt it was damaged in shipping and UPS only covers up to 100 bucks, unless you bought more.

Sales on the forums are implied As-is... I would guess the problem is on his end though, I doubt banging a box around is going to damage a padded ECU to badly.

yeah i know they are but i want to be as fair as possible and dont want anyone that i sale to, to feel like theyve received the short end of the stick.

certainly ups prolly didnt cause it unless their was alot of moisture or something but its a possible solution that would hender a more positive solution for both parties.

Re: What would you do?? Problem with a sale from another member?

It has to be something with his car. The added boost and other aggressive timing/fuel settings just exposed a pre-existing problem with the guys car.

i think if the ECU and/or "code" were 'damaged' the car wouldn't even start or run. only way to be certain though is to test in another car.

tell him to find a local APR dealer and see if they can find anything wrong with the ECU/Program. Otherwise its his problem to deal with not yours.

he told me he contacted one via email yesterday and they said it was a common problem. I looked the shop up and it wasnt autorized by APR so I told him to call APr.. He said he did and they told him it was a common problem with the T box and it would be $175 to fix.. Something just doesnt add up here though. It was fine when I sent it out..

I might just give him his money back minus the paypal and shipping.

If it's the APR "Checksum Error", then it is not common, but not uncommon either. I replaced a couple of modules under warranty when I was working for an APR reseller. It is an indicator of an EEPROM fault on the module itself.

If you refund paypal money the paypal fees are credited back to you anyhow. But sorry to hear about this situation. Let us know how it turns out. I vote for trying it in another car and then you will know for sure. Plus, your purchaser will know and not have any bad feelings. Sounds like you are a stand up guy, that is what we need when dealing with internet sales. good luck.
