Need diagnostic help - Major power loss (UPDATED- PROBLEM FIXED)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Well you guys have heard of this problem from me before, and no, its still not fixed. I am currently apr 1+ should have those numbers and boost in that range. But I dont have any of that, I am basically near stock power (how do I know ? I ran a bone stock passat 1.8t and my hood was 1ft ahead of his.)

My ECU doesnt have a stock program, so thats not it. I just want to know what I should be looking for when I bring the car in to get fixed (i.e. vacuum hose leak, faulty diverter valve, or disconnected hose). I'll explain why I think it could be any of those in a second. I dont have a boost guage but there's obviously power loss.

The symptoms: Loud hissing while in boost, major power loss, I have the equivilent to stock power, when i SHOULD have APR1+ type power.

Possible cause: Well, since it happened right after I got chipped, I remember I was still testing out my full power, and sometimes I dropped into 2nd and floored it right away, and maybe the sudden burst of boost took one of the hoses by surprise, and popped it off.

    1. Maybe a vacuum hose, or some sort of hose leak because my friend got one a while ago nd he lost alot of power then once he sealed it up he got it all back. But maybe not, because he got a CEL when it happened, and I didnt.

    2.
Maybe a faulty DV, when I got the DV put on, the car was fine for 1 day then this happened. Maybe the DV is stuck in the open position. It's Bailey MS DV, but I dont think the possibility for this is high at all, but just a thought.

    3.
Disconnected hose- I'm thinking maybe the mechanics didnt clamp the hose onto the new DV tight enough and the new boost just popped the hose off. My neighbor with a gt28 b5 a4 had the same thing happen to his DV, and he's boosting the same, just alot bigger turbo behind it. He had to tape his hose on real tight in addition to the clamp or whatever.

    4. I gotta get this fixed soon because it's driving me crazy. If they cant find a problem with any of the hoses, then I'm just gonna tell them to take the DV off and put the stock one back on.

I just wanna be able to tell the mechanics what to look for, and what to do, so I walk outta there with a fixed problem and not an known one.

I dont have the necessary tools for a boost leak test so I cant really do that, but I already know theres a boost/power loss so its kinda the next level now.

    Thanks for all your help.

Re: Need diagnostic help - Major power loss

You can check the DV hose real easy your self visually.. just look down between the radiator and the accessory belt area on the passenger side, two medium sized hoses and one small hose off the top that connects to the intake manifold... there are three you can see and fix with out spending more than a little time, and a hose clamp or two... a cracked check valve also would be easy to see and find before hand as well..GL

This same thing happened to mean try looking at ur Suction Y-pump right behind ur manifold under the check valve with 3 nipples! it might look ok but if u tug on it slightly it'll separate! oh and do a boost leak test like the one on A4mods.com! it works!

That's about the line where I go from knowing a moderate amount about this car to knowing nothing about what ur talking about lol. I dont know what a suction y-pump is, or what it looks like or anything. Is it easy to reach/fix ? IDK why or how it would be something weird like that. Anyway, I'll keep the idea in my mind.

Honestly you just need to get under the car and follow the intake piping and see if any hoses have popped off. Also, look and see if your stock intercooler has cracked....

if u open uur hood it's directly in front of ur face behind that aluminum colored metal thing with for pipes going to it(manifold) the thing under the Audi rings! now behind it there are 2 black hose looking things with valves between them one is higher than the other and the lower one is the y pump!

hahahaha Just wanna see if there's any more opinions. I'm not that mechanically advanced, im barely 17 so i cant just walk out and start disconnecting things and jacking the car up and doing all this complicated stuff just to find this problem. I'll go out in a little and do a little looking though as much as i can

Seriously... start looking at the stuff we mentioned.. it is all right in front of you when you open the hood... my y-pump/suction jet pump broke in the middle, if yours is broke you would probably have an issue with your brakes though (um almost no brakes and stalling issues)... all hoses pretty much are suspects... check hose clamps, tighten the ones that may be loose and see if any are popped off.. or just bring the thing to an audi mechanic and pay to TS the problem... GL once again

Ok, I just got out there, and I didnt see any cracked hoses or anything, I saw my DV, which , I had no clue it was in that spot, i thought it was farther down. As for that pump, I didnt look yet. The DV I couldn't fully see because the engine was kinda blocking view so I gotta take the engine cover off and also that big plastic thing that goes into the airbox. I'll keep lookin.

Re: Need diagnostic help - Major power loss (UPDATED- PROBLEM FIXED)

OK well I was out this morning for 45 mins looking and I couldnt find a hole, well i go to my friends house, he has a b5 a4 and he had the same problem about a week ago. So i was like, show me what hose ripped but on my car, and he opens the hood and not even 3 seconds he goes yup theres ur problem. I was like I'll be god damned. I dont know how I missed the hole, but I think it was because it was on the inside of a 90 degree elbow, and you had to really look, but since my friend had teh same problem he spotted it.

Well, I threw on some electrical tape until I get a new hose, and I got ALL of my power back and the hissing it gone, it sounds and feels great.

The hose is the one that comes out of the Intake Mani. and goes back towards the ECU and then has a 90* elbow to the left into this plastic pipe thing. Well, I gotta either get a part number or just get some 1/2 inch rubber tube to replace it at an auto store. IDK what the hose is called and couldnt take a pic because it was too dark, but I bet you guys will know.

AND LASTLY - Thanks everyone for your help, thats really the gift of being a part of AZ.

Lol Looking at dirtbrd's last post, its the hose that connects to the right side of that suction pump, and the other end comes out of the middle of the intake mani. hahaha wow. And I keep telling everyone, it really is amazing that this hole the width of my thumb, not even, in a rubber hose, can bring me from APR 1+ power to what felt like exactly stock power.

Glad you found the problem...but, making the excuse that your are ONLY 17 is complete BS.

Seriously dont be afraid to take your car apart...just have your wits about you and take mental notes of how everything comes off. Think of it as one big ass puzzle.

Yea, I just get nervous i'll screw something up thats why I dont like doing anything I dont think I can handle, I'd rather be safe than sorry. Learned that 2 months ago when I let my friend jack the car up and puncture the oil pan, $500 repair with towing, labor, and parts, and no car for a week. My friend was supposed to be a mechanic, but I guess that didnt matter.

Nice.. glad you found it.. hopefully this will build your confidence about working on the car, also keep the electrical tape handy since it gets pretty hot right there while you look for the replacement hose..
