Not a virgin anymore (PICS) [o_o]

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I finally bought everything I wanted for my engine setup. I will be upgrading the turbo so Im not virgin anymore but a modified Audi. I will give you guys a break down so you know how cheap this hobby is. The install will be done half by me and half by Nate's Automotive. I don't have all the tools and Im still new to turbo cars (I will admit it) so they will help me out.The owner there has a sick Ibis white S4 with K04's and a bunch more. He ran a 12.1 last time. He said next summer he is going GT series turbos and custom everything. It was one mean machine.

Note that there are some things not pictured. Racetec FMIC is in the mail, as well as my borla, and my carbonio, TT, and EBC are already installed. My parts are both new and used.

    K04-015 w/new install kit: $460
    ATP manifold(new version): $200
    GIAC J-31, 317cc injectors, AFPR: $610
    Labree HFC: $280
    Carbonio: $210
    HKS TT: $40
Greddy Profec B Spec II: $250
    Ractec FMIC: $830
    Borla Exhaust: $650
    Forge 007 DV: $125
Oil, plugs, filter, drain plug, gaskets

Knowing that I will have a reliable setup: Priceless
This setup will also allow me later to upgrade to BT possibly with ease.

Make sure you put a de-fouler in your secondary o2 sensor for the labree. You will be kicking yourself in the butt if you don't when you get a CEL from it.

I have a labree also and I wish I would have put a defouler in there when I put it in.

BTW, good luck with the setup. Your going to love the low end torque with that setup. I know I do.

Could you go into more detail about this. I haven't heard about a defouler mod for a HFC. I know about TP's. Is yours a 400 cell count?

Re: Not a virgin anymore (PICS) [o_o]

Yep. Got mine made a few months back. After a month or a month and a half I started to see the effeciency CEL (shown below). I noticed after I went to Englishtown with my car and a CEL came up on the way home so I checked it and bang, there it was.

16804 - Catalyst System: Bank 1: Efficiency Below Threshold
    P0420 - 35-00 - -

I cannot think of a downside to installing the defouler since the 2nd o2 sensor is only used to check whether your cat is working or not so by installing the defouler beforehand you will prevent a headache later on.

This is what you are looking for:

I just went to pep boys and picked up a set for less than 3 bucks.

EDIT: Here is a link to what you want to do with the defouler. You want to drill it out:

NP. Should save you a headache later on.

On a positive note, the fitament of the labree HFC is fantastic. It mounts just like the OEM unit.

you should also do there downpipe if you end up doing an exhaust. the stock downpipe can restrict a lot of flow also.

If we do the defouler mod, it tricks the 02 sensor, but if we are required to do smog (cali), will it pass, or will they say no because of it? Cause I would really love doing a high flow cat or dp, but don't want to deal with the hassle of changing my exhaust every time i need to do a smog check. So would it pass or fail?

Re: Not a virgin anymore (PICS) [o_o]

I have an 01 and installed a Labree couple weeks ago. When I called the shop to order mt cat, the owner told me that he only makes 400 cell ones (I still don't know what that means). I first asked him about how I read threads of how people get CEL bc of his cat, but it was a great product. Then he went to tell me how he only makes 400 CEL ones now because of that. People would get CEL on 300 cell and so forth.

And as for your exhaust. I believe the Borla has a 2.5" downpipe to 2.5" exhaust. If you plan on going big turbo, it would be a wise investment to return that exhaust now before you install for a full refund, and get one with a wider exhaust. Maybe at least 2.75". When you go BT (GT28rs+), the downpipe will be 3" and to have that travel to a 2.5" exhaust is restricting flow. I have 2.75", so mine will not be that bad. Custom is maybe the better route to take. Most shops can make you one (you choose downpipe, exhaust brand and diameter) for around $700+ installed. Cheaper than the Borla, and better investment.

Make sure you get a good diameter depending on how much power your going to be putting out.

    2.25"-ko3 power
    2.5" to 2.75"-ko4
    2.75" and up- BT
Either way to your set up man. Hope you like it.

You are correct about the exhaust but Im not thinking about going BT for at least another 2 yrs so the borla is just fine for my setup. I only paid 650 shipped for a new borla so it was too good of a deal to pass up. Also when I do go BT I will sell the borla and get a custom one made like you said.

So you didnt get a cell with you Labree?

Nope. What prompted me to get the Labree more, besides the price, was that Onemoremile has been running with his for years with no CEL.

Sounds like Labree made a change. I've been running one for a few years without a cel. The newer ones may be different. Mine used a Magnaflow cat and arrived in a Magnoflow or carsound box. I think it was summer 2005.

Yeah thats weird. I was told mine was a 400 cell also. Maybe being at the track all day launching my car at about 4k rpms destroyed the material in it (long shot but it might explain it).

your going to love that hi flow mani. it really opens up the top end. and if you are installing the mani, you need to start all the mani nuts first before you push the mani fully onto the studs because some nuts will not go on if tighten one down. also bend a wrench because its a pain in the ass to do it with a straight wrench

You should be fine with the 2.5" borla if/when you go BT. There are plenty of people running Borla or APR 2.5" exhausts one their cars with BT. $650 is a nice price for a full exhaust so no need to worry about returning it or any of that shiz.

Either way to your set up man. Hope you like it.
Go full 3", with a gutted S4 muffler it was not loud unless I went WOT.

Its just a pain in the butt to get back there to put them in. Much easier if I would have just tossed them in there from the start. Less aggravation and CELs.

There is a simple explanation to the Labree deal.

2000 and 2001 cars run ME7 management using a wideband oxygen sensor which detects catalyst efficiency much more precise than ME5 cars which are 1999 and down. I have a 300 cpsi Labree designed catalyst and it did throw a cel and stayed on after a few months of use.

Bottom line is, use the spacer. Onemoremile has a ME5 management.

I am just flashed with HFC and cat back exhaust (Milltek). When I go BT, I will maybe just sell the exhaust+hfc for maybe $700 and get a B5 S4 Milltek .Love that sound note.

So, one should get that spacer for the 02 sensor? Does it have to be for secondary, primary, or both? I want to get this done before the CEL arises. Thanks!

First of all, the S4 is a V6 Twin Turbo so different sound note. The S4 exhaust is differently routed since its dual exhaust into single muffler so wont work for 1.8T.

Put that spacer on the 2nd O2 sensor. Leave the first as is.

Re: Not a virgin anymore (PICS) [o_o]

I meant the sound note of the Milltek in general.

Edit: Is there a particular size for the non fouler?

    Edit 2:

Keep your Miltek for the bigger turbo man. Quiet is nice.

Look on this thread, its all about this foulter. That HELP thing from autozone. One that fits the sensor.

The ME7 management is just more sensitive for the emission regulations. Best way to eliminate the CEL is a an adjustable spacer. Guy on Vortex makes them and I'm about to purchase one.
