Harbor police pulled me over

What authority does Harbor police have to pull you over off Harbor property? I was leaving Ala Moana the other night and driving on Nimitz when I see this car flying across multiple lanes to get behind me. Then I recognize that it looks like a cop because of the headlights. I look closer and I see the lights on the roof. I was only going a little over 40 in a 35 zone so I didn't think that would warrant a speeding ticket but right as I get near Puuhale Rd I see the lights flash. I pull over and he tells me he's with Harbor Police. Then he tells me the police computer is showing my safety check is expired (I just got it 2 months ago and I have the current sticker). So I tell him it's current, show him the paper work and he goes to check the sticker in the back. Then he gives me this BS about how the shop who did my safety probably forgot to send the paper work in.

Now I'm wondering, if he already knew my safety was showing up expired, that means he was running my plates before he even pulled me over. What authority do they have as far as pulling people over on public roads. I was not on Harbor property nor ever was on Harbor property that night. I really should have wirtten his name and bodge down so I could question later.

Nothing happened and once he verified the paper work and sticker he just said to get it straightened out with the DMV. I'm wondering if maybe he was trying to see if my recon was fake. Still, what could he have done about it other than call in a real cop?

side topic: how'd you get recon with your car modified? i want to get recon for the car being lowered and having 19s, but i don't think i'd pass without changing my lights to have amber lenses and taking the tint off.

My car is legal. License plate is above 12". My wheels are 18"x8.5" so its only +1. My suspension is legal because when I got recon my alignment was within factory spec. I only have a chip for engine mods so nothing visible there. Exhaust is OEM but it's not difficult to get recon for exhaust as long as you have cats and it's not extremely loud.

I got my recon a long time ago (maybe 5 years ago) so I don't know if they've become stricter but I know you have to make an appointment now which wasn't the case when I got it.

You need to go to an alignment shop, and have a printout of your alignment done. The alignment has to be within 30 days of your recon appointment. As long as your bulbs blink amber, you do not need amber lenses, tint has to be +/- 3 of the standard 35%.

The height for license plate law is no more. There are no more height requirements for the front plate, the rule is as long as it is securely fastened to the front, and in clear unobstructed view.

Recon is by appointment only, and you must call to schedule before going in.

oops, i meant tint on the windshield. i stuck amber bulbs in there so they blink orange. i still have a short list of other things i need to do...screw it.

Windshield can't have tint at all.

They sell silver bulbs that light up amber.

What else do you need to make your car legal?

if he was out of jurisdiction than probably not... but, i seriously doubt he would have pulled you over if he was out of his jurisdiction unless he was an idiot...

side story...

about 8 months ago, I was driving on the mainland from PA to VA... I was in PA on I-95S and I noticed a white dodge stratus behind me with blue lights flashing in his windshield, first I was like "ahh shit" then he got close enough for me to see he had NJ tags... I drove that road at least once every two months and I NEVER even go into Jersey... I called 911 and said there was a white dodge with Jersey tags trying to pull me over, put me on hold, came back and said they had no one trying to pull over an Audi and instructed me to take a certain exit, and pull into a certain gas station and they would have a few state troopers there waiting for me (and the idiot trying to pull me over)... I ended up waiting for the next Y in the road and waited until the last second before I took the right side and the moron was stuck taking the left... Would have been nice to see the retard get nailed for impersonating a police officer...

Thursday night I go pulled over on H-1E just past university exit. A Cayenne Turbo rolled past me at like 90 so I bumped it up to pass a Camry doing like 40 in the left lane. I wasn't paying attention and next thing I know the lights came on. She pulled me over for doing 70 in a 45. I was like shit. I told her I was coming home from work and just trying to get home to my girlfriend before waking up to go to work again at 4am. She went back to her car with my license then came back and told me it was a $182 ticket if she gave it to me. She let me off with a warning. Then she questioned why I had my safety sticker in my rear view mirror and I told her I didn't want to ruin my paint and she didn't say anything more. It's the only time a cop has let me off with anything in Hawaii. If it would have been a local I would have been screwed but it was a white chick. Kinda cute for a mid 30s blonde.

Hey Billy, as far as I know they have no jurisdition off of the harbor. So I wouldn't have even sweat it. I don't even know why they would flash you. Damn I should have remembered his name and got his plate. Ass didn't turn his lights off though so I couldn't see the front plate because of the glare from his headlights.

I wouldn't be surpised if harbor police has the same authority as the hpd officers. You should post this on forumshawaii.net. They have a topic section just for this type of situation.
