first time doing my own oil change

didn't feel like paying 275 bucks just for an oil change so im doing it myself.

couldn't get the oil filter to budge. lol i think im just gonna leave it in there because i seriously cant get it out.

and is it bad to put too much oil? i put a little less than 5 quarts and when i checked the dipstick, it was past max. should i drain some?

did you remove the plastic filter container thing?

if you can't get it to come off by hand, you can get one of these

after you remove that plastic container, just pull the filter out. If the filter doesn't seem to want to come out, twist it a little while you pull, it should come right out.

For filter removal your are just removing the bottom of the housing and yes the filter is a bit of a pain to take out and put in.

It is very bad to put too much oil.

this is what I used to open the filter housing:

Aren't you supposed to use this tool to at least drain the oil neatly from the filter? Then remove the filter housing.

"suppose too" maybe, but certainly not necessary by any means. Don't think the cost is justified compared to the mess that you get by not doing it. Just have a good size (wide) drain container and a couple rags.

how long would say say you expect to keep your car? If the answer is more than a couple years you may way want to swap your drain plug for a magnetic one, like the one from ECS.

Re: first time doing my own oil change

It's worth is relative. The one I am referring to, a magnetic drain plug. They catch metal shavings that are created with natural engine wear. If their is a lot it acts like a sand blaster and accelerates wear. Not that big of a deal for some one who isn't going to keep the car very long. To me its cheap insurance, but def. not necessary.

Re: first time doing my own oil change

the magnetic drain plug actually attracts metal debris in the oil to reduce the wear inside of your engine.

I don't know how well it works, but that's the idea behind the thing.

Re: first time doing my own oil change

It is bad to overfill your car with oil. Depending on how bad you overfill it, it will leak down and contaminate your catalytic converter and render it useless. Can also leak out into the intake and create a mess.
    Ignorance is bliss.

Re: first time doing my own oil change

Damn, that is a LOT of oil to make it into the combustion chamber.

And oil changes from the dealer cost $275!? WHAAAAAAT? I'll be doing these myself too then. Unless it would risk my warranty.

smcgann has the right tool in mind. Great for 3/8 rachet providing your doing it from the the top not bottom (if you are doing it from the bottom get two 6" inch extensions).

I wish there was some way you guys can have screw-on oil filter! Seriously, audi, vw, toyota, hyundai, and other manufacture all decided to use oil canister type on new car models.

$275 for an oil change is quite alot. I pay $82-84 to do oil change at the dealer.

Re: first time doing my own oil change

You should use one of these for a nice neat oil change
    http://www.ecstuning.com/stage/edpd/...productID=8616

And I just used a large adjustable wrench to get the filter cartridge off the first time.
Hand tight will be fine when putting it back on.
