Help, Wont shift with car on !?!?! Help

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So i get in the car this morning and the gearbox feels abnormally notchy.
I try to shift with the car off and everything works fine.
Turn the car on and the gearbox is inoperable.
So i get halfway down the street waiting at a red light and I can't shift back into first.
I turn off the car put it in first and start it, I then continue to drive home in first gear.
So what causes the car to not shift when the engine is running?

This has happened to me a few times too. Most recently it happened and I said f*it, and I'm pretty sure its the throwout bearing. Ever heard a loud squealing when you release the clutch?

could be the pressure plate or the hydraulic fluid in the slave cylinder is leaking out somewhere slowly. thats how my maxima was.

Re: Help, Wont shift with car on !?!?! Help

Like others have said, its either the clutch or the slave cylinder. Im going through the same problems right now. I bought a new clutch and everything to go with it, then a little bit ago i found out that it was the slave cylinder that caused the problem. I would check the slave first, and if that isnt it then its time to drop the trans to throw in a new clutch.

Same thing happened to me when my clutch wore out. The clutch disc gets too thin and the SAC can't adjust any further.

Check the slave cylinder and brake fluid reservoir first, then if you have to, replace the clutch and PP.

I can get you the parts you need.

Re: Help, Wont shift with car on !?!?! Help

I am first assuming that its the slave cylinder because, when the car is off I am able to shift fine through the gears, meaning I have built up enough pressure behind the slave to move the clutch.
When the car is on it just can't build the pressure.......I hope.
I really would rather not have to replace the clutch.

Thanks for all the replies though

With the car off you can shift without the clutch most of the time, so that's not necessarily an indication that the clutch is good. First test the slave cylinder, then look into the suckier job, the clutch.

i doubt its a slave, you would see fluid on the ground and the clutch would be on the floor. i will bet money its the presure plate.

Not necessarily, make sure its enough fluid and bleed the clutch, it that wont help then its either slave or other, do every possible way before taking off the tranny!
