Johnny,
thanks for posting the info on SpeedVentures.
I went to their auto-x event this past Saturday at the California Speedway in Fontana and had a great time.
paid $80 and it was worth every dollar spent - started my run from 11 am till 4 pm, about 15 runs.
the best times were achieved by 3 Mazda Miata's - one of the drivers is a track instructor at the California Speedway, setting the best time at 36.87x seconds.
I was probably the only driver with an automatic trans and, boy, did I regret not taking my G35c 6MT.
I somehow managed to achieve 41.975 sec, among the top 10 times, beating an '00 Corvette, couple of BMW 3's, couple of S2000's, an Evo, a Civic Si, couple of E36 M3's, a GTI, couple of Miata's, a classic
CRX and some other cars I can't remember now.
I was able to manage most of my times around low-42 sec, whereas these cars had their times from mid-42 sec to 50+ sec.
the top performers (beside 3 Miata's) include 3 WRX's, a modded E46 M3, a 200SX - times range from high-38 sec to mid-41 sec.
I was quite impressed with my A4 w/ not much mods (equipped with RS4 rear sway, APR 91 and Michelin Pilot Sport's), the way it handled the turns definitely did shine.
only if it were a 6MT, I'm positive I could've achieved better times - being unable to select the right gear in and out of the turns just plain sucked.
I must've pushed my car pretty hard though...the rear passenger side tire got ripped and all 4 tires got beat up/worn out a lot.
considering each of them costs $250-$260, I'm not planning to auto-x with expensive street tires again.
a designated set of track/auto-x tires on a set of much lighter wheels (17 lbs) should help.
btw, I was very impressed by an old Nissan 200SX achieving low-40 sec consistently.
it seemed to have some mods (exhaust, shocks, drag tires), but it didn't seem like much.
I guess it indicates that a skilled driver is the best mod.
unfortunately I was the only Audi driver at the event and I'd love to see more Audi's around.
a few drivers asked me what mods I had installed.
they were all quite surprised when they found out I was running on an automatic 4 banger with a set of street tires and a stronger rear sway bar (besides APR 91).
couldn't help myself but kept on smiling.
