    New 98 Quattro 2.8, 1st gear chatter, only on accel.

    Sound familuar?
    Its not a grinding or bad syncro, only in 1st gear zero in second or any other gear. If it wasn't only in 1st gear on Accel. I would think it was a heat shield rattle.

    Ideas?

    Mine makes a clicking noise do to a chipped first gear. I don't know if that helps you.

    It is a cracked/chipped first gear. Its gonna be cheaper to find one used then to rebuild.
    I lost my first tranny due to this and am working on my second.

    How long will it last me like this? Is there any risk to driving it as a daily driver?

    Is it a constant noise?

    Mine will chatter here and there at manuvering slowly in 1st, low 2nd and reverse, especially in heat. Been like that for years.

    Mine only did it in 1st.
    You can drive for awhile like this, but it'll get real annoying.
    And Don't launch the car hard, or it'll get worse and worse.
