Brake Opinion Needed

Hey guys.

I need to get my brakes done. I'm not looking to upgrade rotor size or anything like that.

Right now I'm looking at getting the ECS cross drilled/ slotted rotors and no idea what pads to get.

Are the ECS rotors a good product or does someone else make something better? I'm not really looking at big braking power. More for durability. I'm happy with the stock brakes. They lasted pretty long and stop well enough.

Also I'd like to know what pads to get. Something that will last long, won't create lots of dust and noise.

As long as the combo performs/ lasts as good or better than stock I'm happy.

Stock 1.8T front brakes are crap. Seriously undersized to handle controlled stopping of a car that's very heavy.

If you're looking for simple upgrades, look to 3.0 front brakes, B5 S4 or B6 S4, or A8 front brakes. If you haven't flushed and filled your brake fluid (should be done every 2 years regardless of miles), do that and replace with DOT 4 complaint fluid (Motul 5.1 also counts). For rotors, a slotted rotor will help to keep the pad surface clean for best contact. A better brake pad like Hawk HPS will also handle better bite and higher temps.

Thanks. If I wanted to upgrade I'd get the porsche 6 piston setup. But I don't want to spend anymore money on the car. I've never had a problem with the stock brakes. I don't track the car or anything like that. I'd just like to know what to replace them with now that the stock ones are used up.

dude, it's not that much more. labor on to do front brakes will be like 2 hours maximum, I did mine was 2 hours.
if you buy brand new rotors, it's like 200. you do the math.

i would just get slotted with stock sized rotors, if u do drilled and slotted, you are losing a lot of rotor surface... BTW SS lines and motul 5.1 fluid did the best for my brakes.. 3.0 setup is a waste at fulll price but if u get a good deal, pick it up! ECS rotors are shit, thats what i have.. plus i waited 4 months for them.. nothing but empty promises

You guys misinterpreted my post, for what you pay for them from ECS brand new, they are shit... and i say their rotors are shit because mine rusted right after getting them(supposedly plated) and are already worn with 20k miles... just not quality..i dont know his price on his stuff, but if its reasonable, pick it up.. i just wouldnt pay full price for it because i didnt gain anything in performance.. just more resistance to fade but they still fade.... some OEM sized rotors, slotted with good pads and SS lines/motul fluid would have got me the same benefit

Also you are selling the calipers and I don't need those. I don't think you'd want to part them? I want these brakes to last as long as my stock brakes lasted me. My car has 86k KM on it right now.

I appreciate all the advice. But, if you guys were to buy a rotors/ pads combo. Factory 1.8t size. What brands of rotors / pads would you buy?

I just did my brakes about a month ago. i love my ecs slotted rotors. i read somewhere that if the rotors had the holes drilled into them, then they are prone to crack. i also really really love my hawk hps pads. (you can get them w/ sensors at tire rack). for brake fluid i used the motul rbf 600, but that is probably overkill. also, hawk hps pads have pretty good bite and MY REAR RIMS ARE STILL CLEAN AND I HAVENT CLEANED THEM IN 2 WEEKS!!!!!!!

ATE PremiumOne 3.0 rotors from Tirerack are nice. MetaCote coating = no rust. I have mine for over two months and no rust.
I flushed system with ATE SL6 which I got from local store ~$10/L.
use car-parts.com to locate 3.0 parts for cheap.

Ok. So I ended up getting the 3.0 rotors because ECS doesnt have the 1.8t sizes available until mid august. I have one more question. All I need is the caliper carriers right? Nothing else? No special screws or anything like that?

If you're not a spirited driver just go with some plain rotors, Hawk HPS pads and ATE gold (not superblue) or Motul fluid. If you want to give yourself a bonus, get stainless steel lines.

If you are a spirited driver, then entertain the 3.0 upgrade or more.

I have Hawk HPS, SS lines, Ate gold and plain zimmermann rotors. Works fine and since it was a DIY (CLINT FTW!) the extra stuff cost the same as it would if I had sought a shop to do it.

The best part? LESS DUST!

yes, you have everything needed there. thats the exact same setup i got... i was very dissapointed... very little discernable difference in braking power for the $$$ i dropped... i should have just got stoptech for a little more (at the time) or i could have just got slotted rotors/SS lines and fluid for about half what i paid... dont worry about the rotors cracking, thats an old myth from when they didnt CAD design rotors, and few of us are hard enough on them to crack them anyway...

you will like the looks of the bigger CD/slotted rotors up front though

Sweet thanks. I don't really care about better stopping power. The only reason I got the 3.0 setup is cause the smaller rotors were on backorder. I'd feel too bad with stoptech or brembos in the winter. All that salt and crap. And mostly I got the CD/ Slotted for looks. If it helps with stopping then thats a nice bonus.

Anyway the brakes will be on sometime today.
