im 10 minutes outise of boston, and im looking for a shop to install a new clutch, and for a tranny rebuild. im supplying all the parts i just need labor done. i have gone to ESP in sterling ma and while they did a good job on my stage 3 install, im not sure they could do a tranny rebuild. I know of KTR, but thats the only other speed shop i know of in my area. could anyone give me some more shops to choose from?

    Re: Shop needed!!

If I were in your situation I would do one of two things:

    1) Pull trans and send it to Stasis for a rebuild. While expensive, you know it will be done right. And if there happen to be any problems with the rebuild, Stasis always stands behind their products so you wont be left out to dry. For a big, high cost, project like a tranny rebuild I would rather pay more for it to be done right, by a repitable, well established shop.

OR 2) buy a used trans from a junked S4, A6 or Allroad. In the end, it would probably cost less than a rebuild and you wont have any downtime since you could just swap in the new one (assuming your car is still drivable now).

The route I would go would depend on finances, time and if I want mods done to the tranny while it's out. But #2 will probably be the cheapest and easiest, assuming you can find a working trans for cheap.

i wouldnt want to go with another tranny, in fear of it going south rather quick. im buying the rebuild kit from JHM, then having a shop install it.

Seems to me that there is more of a chance of something going wrong by doing that rather than just buying a used tranny. Even if the shop installs the parts wrong, they will blame the rebuild kit that you brought them. Then you will still have a bum trans, and no recourse to get your money back.

Best thing to do is either send it to JHM and have them install their own kit, or take it to a shop and let them use their own parts. That way you have some recourse if the rebuild doesn't work out as planned.

And what happens if you start to DIY and figure out you're way in over your head? Then you're going to have to pay someone to finish what you've started. And there is a good chance many shops wont want to work on sometime you've already taken appart and probably broken. Not to mention good luck getting a core charge for a disassembled tranny.

Yes DIY is an option. But unless you have the skills and understand that you may end up spending MORE if you mess something up or get in over your head, then I would suggest taking it to a professional.

Again, the best route would definitely be buying a used tranny and swapping it in. Then S4evr can even sell his broken trans and recoup some money.

i called ESP in sterling ma again to get a qoute, and they just called back with a qoute of 1400-1500 for tranny rebuild and clutch swap. they assured me they can tranny rebuilds as they have done several before. They have also done my stage 3 swap so i am very confident in them. it looks as if i will be bringing it to them.

Well good for you. But not everyone has the time, skill, tools or confidence to do it themselves. The OP was asking for a shop to do the rebuild, so it's pretty safe to say he doesn't want to do it himself.
