basically, theyre shocks and springs all in one package fitted together for optimal performance. The benefit is that most coilover set ups allow you to adjust the height setting and how stiff you want them (improving handling by sacrificing ride comfort).

hope that helps. i wont flame you for that question but im willing to bet some people on here will. hahaha. jk jk

coilovers are a spring/shock combo sold for cars that generally come with one of three sets of options:

    1 height adjustability
    2 height and rebound adjustability
3 height rebound and compression adjustability

price varies by which one you get, there's lots of different brands, and different brands are adjustable in different ways (the construction of the spring perch which you use to change height varies the most)

performance gains are improved handling. less body roll, better/quicker stabilization after bumps and turns, etc. think of your car as a teeter-totter. the faster you can go from one extreme back to a balanced state, the better. you want your car in as neutral a position as possible when cornering (unless you have some predictive and super futuristic suspension which can preload a corner/side to give you the effect of "leaning" into a turn.... which i doubt you do.)

Coil overs are shocks/struts that have adjustable spring purches, to adjust the ride height at each corner if needed. On our A4s, the rear spring seats are adjustable but the same spring shock arrangement is used. The main benifit is the individually adjustable ride height.
