A while back, we had a thread dealing with Stage 3 cars in this forum.
One unpleasant finding that came about from that thread was that Borg Warner claimed that the RS4's K04 turbos would not fit on the 2003-2004 A6 2.7T Tiptronic cars. (this includes 2003-2005 allroads too!) After discussing this with Jeremy@matrix, we concluded that the turbos on those above mentioned cars were in fact different in shape/design and that they would not fit for that reason.
A week ago, I took the time to compare the part numbers of the turbo inlets, exhaust manifolds, oil lines, coolant lines and downpipes for both the 2003+ tip cars and the older tip cars. As a result, I discovered that the ONLY different part was the downpipes and the gasket for them. This was a direct indication of where the issue lies.
I was talking with Greg@SSP Tuning and he told me that he had seen the threads on this and explained to me that he has removed and modified downpipes on the 2003+ tip cars. The ONLY change is that the inital piping makes a sharp curve to get around the transmission's housing.
With all this being said; it is definitely possible to install K04 turbos on the tiptronic equipped 2003+ cars.
It would be fair to say that even though the K04s will fit, you will have to modify the downpipes to allow them to reach the slightly shifted location where the turbine housings are now situated. It will not be a 100% bolt on. If you are planning on doing a stage 3 setup, new downpipes isn't a big pile of cash in comparison but, it will cost a few hundred bucks to modify your original set.
I hope this helps some of you out there.
