    Air Bag light is on

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    I searched...
I got my Air Bag light on today... First it was there for 2 minutes, then it went away... Happened like 5 times... Now it is solid...
I haven't scanned for codes yet, but most likely it is the seat belt tensioner...
How much am i looking at with the labor???
Is that ok to drive with it for a while???

I wouldn't say it's ok if you don't really know the source of the problem, but I've been driving with an airbag light myself, for almost 10K now Hmm, maybe it's time I do something about it too, lol.

Same thing happened to me the other day. I took it in and they said it will be $50-100$ just to diagnose the cause + however much it will cost to fix on top of that...

^+1 my airbag light was on, i took it to the dealer since i was still under warranty and they had to fix the sensor under the driver's seat. it's probably the connection, that's why the light comes on and off. if that's what it is, then it is ok to drive with.

Re: Air Bag light is on

Exact cost for replacement seat belt tensioners for both sides, including labor, comes to $718.40 at the stealership ($240 for labor, $239.20 for each tensioner). Had them do mine this morning, just picked it back up, it hurt to write that check.

Mine was on because mine had been in an accident, but since I am planning on selling my car I figured I would get it turned off. Damn expensive...

BTW, that same dealership charged me $120 to scan the computer and see why it was on.

My mechanic said that its most likley firing machnism senssor...
he said its costley to replace; however the air bag will work fine (right now). So I didnt see a point in fixin it.

Re: Air Bag light is on

I asked all of my local Audi dealers and 3 in LA when I had an airbag light on due to a bad connector when I did my Recaro swap and this is the answer I was given:

If your airbag light is on solid then ALL of the airbags in your car are deactivated as the system has found a fault.

If this is 100% true or not I'm not going to test and find out.

Re: Air Bag light is on

You probably have a bad airbag connector somewhere.

When I have someone sit on the rear passenger side seat my airbag light goes on. If the person moves to the rear driver side it goes off.

I did have one of my seatbelt igniters go bad and that needed to be replaced as well. That also tripped the airbag light.

You can't just clean the connectors either as they are stupid sensitive to resistance changes.

Mine went on when the losers at the dealership removed the driver's seat to fix the leather part. They later fixed it of course.

SOOOO if you been playing around your seat or poked things around there, it could be coz of the connectors under the seat.

Mine turned out to be two things. The airbag harness under the seat and the sensor went bad in the rear left seatbelt. I replaced the rear seatbelt and the dealer is fixing the harness as we speak.

Re: Air Bag light is on

I had the passenger side airbag light problem also. Scan said same thing as Skeeball's above. First time it happened, I unplugged and re-plugged in the airbag connector under the seat and then cleared the code. This lasted for a short while and then the light came back solid for the same thing. Since I had installed S4 Recaros, I knew the dealer wouldn't cover this although it is safety related.

I consulted with diagnosticator and he pointed me in the direction of the TSB covering this. The problem is due to too much resistence in the plug with the small gauge wires used. I would consider this a design flaw. Sorry, don't have the TSB number handy! It involves jumpering the wires to the plug connector for the airbag in the seat itself. Follow the wire harness which goes from the floor sockets into the seat and you'll see the plug clipped to the seat bottom cushion itself. PITA, because to work on this you have to remove the seat itself. Once you get the seat out (I just tipped mine back after unbolting to access the seat bottom) it's about a 15-20 min. job. The TSB recommends butt splicing the wires; I used Scotch taps and some spare lengths of yellow 18-20 gauge wire to bypass the connector. Left the connector itself plugged. Cleared the code and it's been good for several months. You def need the vagcom to see exactly what the problem is and to reset the airbag light. Otherwise, you're at the mercy of the stealer.

Major Caution! Make sure to disconnect your battery before you do any work on an airbag system. Diagnosticator also cautioned me not to use a digital Ohm meter on this wiring as even a tiny microvoltage can set the airbag off!

    Hi all,
I am re-new to Audizine (I had joined in 03 when I got my A4 and kind of fell off the site when I didnt have the cash to start modding).

I hope some of you may be able to answer/ help with:

    Issue:
About a month ago my battery died and I replaced it. Since then my airbag light comes on after about 15 minutes of driving (and lucky me its as my inspection was about to expired).
Took my car to the dealership and after paying for 3 hours of labor they are saying that the complete VIN is not being stored in the instrument cluster and as a result the airbag light is on sicne the cluster VIN does not match the other components that store the VIN. To replace the instrument cluster they state will be over $1400. Needless to say that is a lot to spend, yet my car will not pass inspections with the light on.

    Questions:
Is what the dealer saying legit?
Is this a reasonable price for parts and labor to replace?
Is there a way to disable the light to at least get through the inspection and then I can work it out? (I tried pulling the fuse but the odometer display is replace by "FUSE" so that will not work).
Are the airbags still functional with the light on (assuming what the dealer diagnosed was correct)?

    TIA

You might hear conflicting answers as to whether or not the airbags work when a fault is detected in the system, but more people from Audi told me the whole system becomes disabled and airbags will not deploy, compared to few that told me that they will. Dealer labor/part cost is never "reasonable" but sometimes you don't have a choice. I couldn't find any third party that would fix my airbag problem, everyone told me they don't want to touch this and to take it to the dealer. I paid a total of 500$ Canadian to get it fixed, and in my case, it was a side impact sensor, which is relatively easy and quick to replace.
