Auto Dim Mirrors wtf?

The first few days of driving after the car sat in the garage for about a month due to upgrades I noticed my mirrors were always dimmed when driving through shaded areas or even if the sun was in a strange spot. Now I only get half assed dimmed mirrors at night, my question is what regulates and tells the mirrors to dim? Possibly something is going bad? The car is an 01 a4.

Change out your interior rear view... It holds the sensor and sends the signal out to the exterior mirrors... I changed mine to a B6 mirror with compass and now they get DARK and it takes very little light for them to change... All uniform too...
