Just curious if anyone knew how many lateral G's they are making, street tire or not.

Post your suspension setup, tire, weight reductions made, and estimate HP.

    Thanks!

Re: Anyone know how many lateral G's there makin?

I have a nifty gadget in my car that reads G's forward/backwards and left/right.

Most I've pulled was 1.3 sideways G's in a corner.

FK Coils, Kumho Ecstas ASX, zero weight reduction, ~210hp.

Peak G is totally different than the sustained G magazines report from skidpad testing. A stock minivan can hit way over 1 g in an emergency maneuver.

    1.3 Eh?

Your nifty gadget is wrong... lol. What are you using?

Stock is under .90, and I think our cars (were both similarly setup) should be close to .95 or .98, (Very few street cars can go over 1G on street tires). At the last autox I was in the tarmac was very sticky and my tires where nice and hot and grippy, I have a sneaking suspicion that I surpassed 1G that day, but I have no way of knowing until I go back out with my Gtech.

Again, peak or momentary g is a lot different than maintaining that average for a full revolution of a skidpad. Take it from someone that has run around tire rack's skidpad until almost puking. My old 94 Jetta VR6 on Azenis hit 1 g average. My Avant probably did a bit better with corner balanced coilovers, H-Sport bars, and r-comp tires but there was no meter in the car. I'd bet my new suspension setup (Shine Racing custom valved Bilsteins, stock sport front bar, H-Sport rear bar) does even better since there will be less body roll and better balance.

To bad 5th gear isn't broadcast here anymore, I miss it, rivals TopGear in my mind.

Fifth Gear is good for content but they can't match Top Gear's comedy.

I can most likely get a screenshot of the corner and the exact moment with the readouts of when I was hitting 1.3G. That was max of course, I was probably hovering around 1.1-1.2 for most of it until the center.

lol, that isnt just any BMW. the car is a specialized touring car. Granted it is stock but not a car you can go out and buy easily.

I'll bet an M3 does better. So will a lot of performance cars. Others may do worse. The point was that it is achievable on street tires in a stock car.

With my tires and suspension I should be able to do at least that well. Of course, my tires have a 160 treadwear and are very grippy but they are still a long way from real r-comps. Hoosier Rs should do 1.2 or better on our cars with proper suspension setup and the As will do even better.

Re: Anyone know how many lateral G's there makin?

I'm fairly certain you can use a Nintendo Wii remote to measure g forces. I'll dig up the link. I got a Wii so I need to test this out.

Here's the info on using the remote: http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=3362586
Why not use the wiimote's built in 3-axis accelerometers to measue g-forces, acceleration and even calculate my own 0-60mph times!

It certainly seems like a lot to me. I know my Gtech isnt extremely accurate (which is why im getting a RR one..)...

Was it full on camber corner? because that will greatly increase your possible grip.

That WI remote is awesome... but I doubt its very accurate..

Not highly accurate because it rounds the numbers to two decimal places.. But I'm gonna have to try it out some weekend.

Yeah it probably was like ~.1 off, but it definitely felt like it was up there.

I'll upload the screenshot hopefully tonight.

Do you mean a super elevated curve? that doesn't increase the physical grip it just moves the cars center of gravity.
