    Finally Started

Well I switched gears in my setup at first i was going to bolt my kit to a bone stock 2.7 setup and run the gt2560ss...

After really looking at my engine i started finding several oil leaks that i couldn't find when I was driving the car, lower oil pan, upper oil pan, front crankshaft seal, valve cover gasket.

Since I would be taking 80% of the motor apart i would be crazy not to freshen the motor up, i was completely shocked when i took the motor apart and find the bearings and cylinders honestly looking brand new.

After looking at the rods and the tiny 5/16 rod bolts and the way there made i can see why the rods fail, i took the rods to a very well known local top fuel guy who's been building dragsters and land speed cars/everything in between for 40 years. I didn't say 1 word i handed him the rod and his words where "thats a really said rod bolt" all i could do is laugh..

I do have the upgraded rod bolts from ARP, but decided to buy rods as Alex, from Vag really made it worth it for me..

The setup will still be simple and full interior,

    Stock 2.7 heads&cams,springs,retainers

    2.7 intake manifold&throttle body

Stock Y pipe for now until I make one

    My aluminum Bi-pipes

    My GT2560 kit

Either custom dual 2.5 inch or single 3.5 inch exhaust with CATS/CAT

This will be a real basic setup and my goal for the car is not to build the fastest or most hp car out there, but to have a really fun practical car i could drive all year long and not worry if i wish to put the car seat in for my baby.. Also for that occasional race/expressway blast

Well at least you're not going to have to worry about the block anymore after this. One less thing to do. Looks like you can start chasing some good power now. And if you want you can do the heads later. Can't wait to see how it turns out. Good luck.

just do rods, and depending on the wear on your engine you might want to do some new piston rings and bearings.

Sounds kick ass. When do you think you will have it up and running?

So the pistons and rings looked good for another go around? This news may change my plans for when the turbo fairy comes to visit.

    Re: Finally Started

Gen JDM, you are basically getting the same rod bolt (arp2000) that you have on your stock rods, the ChroMo rods are the obv. strength to the new rods, also, from what I have heard, it seems like the stock rod bolts were not as much the weakness as the actual rod beam bending, anyway you look at it, it is a smart way go

    Re: Finally Started

I understand i will only get a 5/16 rod bolt, but the way and what the bolt is made out of is more important.. I would love a 3/8th bolt.haha... You'll be surprised if more failures where probably caused by the bolt then not.

The motor will just get a fresh hone and rings with new rod bearings&mains, even though the motor/bearings still have the factory coating still in place with zero wear..

The main bearings sizes are stamped on the block I believe mine was G. G. R. G for the mains..

Tke your time and triple check everything as it's not as hard as you think.. I'm shooting for mid-late summer..

    Re: Finally Started

from me dealing with blown motors at the auctions on the S4 i had over 5 engines where a rod bent and snapped in half, i never had a failure from a rod bolt, just from a rod bending and snapping in half. So i don't think the bolts are to worry about. New Rods a must is you want to make power.

Heres what most people don't realize, a bad rod bolt doesn't need to be physically broke or show signs to the naked eye to be bent or stretched, if a bolt is stretched one thing leads to another which is more then enough to actually snap a rod..

I would say if your going to be in the area do rods, but if your looking for safe hp maybe 480-490whp and really don't beat the snot out of the car then leave it alone... With rods and a nice fresh motor sky's the limit, ok maybe not sky's the limit, but I'm sure 600+whp. Vast has shown 509whp on the stock bottom end, on a pretty accurate dyno. What i would say is drive a true 480-500whp car first then see how ridiculous fast that is already..

    Re: Finally Started

Update, rods are here, motors at the machine shop getting honed, rings where shipped, but only 1 set arrived someone needs to find the other 5.. Heads got new valve seals there ready to be put back together. Turbo kit is almost finished should be done by friday, but like the last 4 sets that where mine seemed to fine there way into other peoples cars haha.. Ordering the clutch and the fuel pump this week from 034, from there just a few small odds and ends to order and the parts list is finished.. I'm doing this completely by myself in my spare time, so hopefully with some luck I might be able to turn the key in 30 days..

    Re: Finally Started

are you going with the spec 034 5+ ??? This is the clutch I am probably going to use, they say it holds stupid torque and it is only a single disc, just has a crazy pressure plate!

I'm really considering the single steel flywheel with either the spec 5 or the stage 4 cm

    Re: Finally Started

Why wouldn't I need either especially if I'm shooting for 550+whp? I've had many talks with alex at Vag about this and they've tried just about everything in a single config and nothing lived north of 485whp on the unitronics dyno... If I get a great deal on a twin I will run that for sure..

Damn man- you're already putting this thing back together?! well, almost. Nice job in making this a quick turn around thing...

Twin disk would be my pick for you with that amount of power...but I wouldn't know personally cause I don't have a car

I have had the 034 steel fw since it came out, its a nice piece, I am gonna run the spec 5+ and she how she holds up, I am only nervous about the fact that my motor is balanced with that flywheel and I dont think it will except a twin setup unless it was a one-off fab....oh well, they say she holds BIG #s
