    Upgrading the turbo

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Brand new owner of a B6, but not new to the platform (I drove my ex-gf's around for a couple years). It's a manual 2002 with a hair under 90K miles and it's FWD (couldn't find/afford a quattro). I'm excited, it's definitely a different beast than my Integra was!

I've read through the various FAQs as not to be a n00bass, and got the basics of what's needed to upgrade the turbo. I want to do so in the near future, but what would guys recommend? I don't have SERIOUS power goals, but would like to get as close to 300WHP as possible. I've seen that a lot of users bash on the GTRS eliminator kit due to the exhaust manifold choking the system, correct? Could I go with a T3/T4 for a little less and achieve my target goal? For the T3/T4 I need a few different parts, would this cover it?

    - T3/T4 .50 trim

    - Oil/fuel hoses and return lines

    - 440cc Genesis injectors

    - Bigger fuel pump

    - AFPR and boost controller

    - Unitronics or REVO tuning

    - Intake pipe and exhaust manifold

    - Testpipe and down pipe

    - Cat back exhaust

    - Intercooler

    - New DV

    - New stage 4 clutch

What else am I missing. Can I ask how much some of you spent on your GTRS or T3/4 setup? Which would you guys recommend? Thanks guys!

GTRS is a great turbo don't go any other way, and recently a unitronics built GTRS blew the motor! so REVo FTW!

It did? That's sketchy, guess I'm gonna have to go with REVO. The only difference between the GTRS and GT28rs is that, the eliminator kit doesn't require a new exhaust manifold, right?

First, you need to figure out a budget.

    Second, do supporting mods first.
    -Exhaust
    -DV
    -FMIC
    -Clutch
-Tuning of some sort. (REVO has blown engines too so don't worry about opinions)
    -Turbo Inlet Pipe
    -Brakes
    -Suspension
    -Etc.

    Third, you do not need
-a boost controller when you have the correct programming
    -new fuel pump

No, you do not need a new manifold but one with improved flow is optimal.

Well, that's what I'm sort of trying to gauge (that's why I'm wondering what some of you have spent on your base setup).

I'm already going ahead and purchasing the suspension (Koni sports + Eibach springs) along with the RS4 rear sway. For the brakes, will my stock ones be sufficient? I can't swing a BBK, so could I do something like upgrading to S4 fronts?

I was figuring with a proper tune, I wouldn't need a boost controller, but I wanted to make sure. I don't really want to upgrade to a FMIC, clutch, etc. until I purchase the turbo parts.

-- OEM brakes are barely sufficient with a stock or chipped car... don't be foolish when it comes to reigning in all those ponies. And do both the front and back when you do, and upgrade to S/S lines to improve the pedal feel. It's worth it.

Best bet for cash/performance balance is B5 or B6 S4 calipers/carriers and then get some Powerslot or Zimmerman rotors and some good pads (like Hawk HPS or Ferrodo or Mintex or whatever).

-- Add a slush fund of a thousand or so for modding these cars... you'll appreciate it greatly when (not if) the time comes for an unexpected expenditure.

-- Last, include in your budget for some things like a Podi/vent gauge and a VAG too... you'll regret not having both later.

    GL and have fun!

    And welcome!

The stock ones will stop but they will not do it repeatedly from fast speeds. try and find B7 a4 or s4 fronts (same caliper)

    Re: Upgrading the turbo

Cool. I figured that I would need a "cushion" of about a grand for all the little nuts and bolts I might overlook. I had Hawk HP+ on my last car and they rocked, I'll probably getting those pads again. I've also been looking in to the steering column pod so I could throw a nice Defi-D gauge in there :)

    Re: Upgrading the turbo

Back to my part of my original post, the general consensus is the GTRS over the a T3/T4 setup? I imagine I could hit 300WHP with both of these setups correct?
