    Re: Wheel Bearing DIY

Depends in you are planning on pressing in your own bearings or not. There are some wheel bearing tools that enable you to change the bearing without removing the bearing housing (upright).

If you have to remove the bearing housing, here's the deal.

    Take off the wheel.
Take off the brake caliper, rotor, and disconnect the ABS sensor and remove it from the bearing housing.
Take off the nuts on the lower control arm ball joints and press them out of the bearing housing (careful not to tear the boots)
Take out the bolt from the upright at the upper control arms. Pop out the upper control arm ball joint shafts from the bearing housing. Remove the tie rod end from the BH.
Remove the bearing housing and press out the hub and the old bearing.

    Re: Wheel Bearing DIY

I was going to attempt this when I bought the car a few years ago, but since It was already in the shop for state inspection, I just had them do it along with CV's. Done it on older audis with a hub puller but the newer cars may require some extra oomph.

    Re: Wheel Bearing DIY

i got the passenger side stripped down to the hub as the sun set, so i will continue tomorrow. my friend's shop has a tool that you bolt onto the hub, then slide a weight back and forth, hitting it against the center of the hub, this somehow makes the hub fall out with the bearing.. ive used this tool to do bearings on an 01 jetta, should it work on mine too?

So it's a hub shark/tamer/puller tool? I think the guy in the link tried it and it didn't work. That's why he broke out the press. Any pictures of the tool?

    Re: Wheel Bearing DIY

I used this piece of kit to press out/press in both front wheel bearings on my car (not an audi)

    http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=45210

I also used a electric impact wrench as it's tough/slow going with the breaker bar.

What's the tool that allows the bearing to be removed without taking off the bearing housing? Is it reasonable to buy, or is it an expensive shop tool?

    Re: Wheel Bearing DIY

the tool i plan on using looks like a standard pulley puller, as in it bolts into the component you want removed (hub) and the center screws into the shaft of whatever the component rests on and pulls it out slowly. this is how my tool works but instead of screwing it off, it has a slide weight that you hit into the hub, and knocks the hub out. will post pics later.
