    K&N 57-0282 Intake Kit - ** REVIEW **

Since there are very few options for an intake outside of EvoMS and Carbonio for our 1.8t's I figured I'd give this kit a shot and post up a review

I took my time installing it, and sprayed the stock heat shield with black engine paint so it took about an hour and a half. I had a 450 mile trip yesterday during which I was able to attain an average of just over 34mpg... prior to this the highest I ever got was 31.9mpg with the stock airbox and paper filter... that's over 2mpg!! (Other mods include eBay FMIC, Borla v2 2.25" Turboback exhaust with 2.5" Techtonics HFC, N75H, GIAC 93 flash... being lowered on coilovers may help with directing wind around the car rather than under it, but I also run 17" wheels. Smaller and lighter wheels would definitely help)

These retail for about $80-90, they sound sweet, and they practically pay for themselves. Over the course of one tank that's an extra 30 miles. At $4 a gallon, it'd only take 20 fill ups to pay for itself, after that it's like free money

I tried keeping it as stock looking as possible so I mounted the snorkel above it even though the directions called for using the supplied metal hose ducting. The directions showed a different way of mounting the ICM and other wiring but I rotated the MAF so everything would sit under it rather than above or aside of it (looks much cleaner). With a decent heatshield I don't doubt an increase in power and gas mileage

    A++

Honestly, build a heatshield. I have a heat shield ans still my filter gets somewhat hot in this 31 degreee weather over here

I had already purchased one of those, however, the reason I didn't mention that one specifically is because I didn't have a good buying experience with the seller. I wasn't 100% satisfied with the product, either, but he did hold true to his word and he took it back with a 100% refund

What do you get for $80? All I see is a cone filter.

Why not just get a generic cone filter at Autozone, itll do the same thing.

I see that, but he is not using the 180 that will put the filter toward the front of the bay for a little colder air. At least not in the pictures.

I bought an aluminum 180 on Ebay for $15 and made a heatshield out of $10 worth of sheet metal + any filter you choose and my filter is tucked WAY down under my headlight. You can see it in my gallery.

I'm not trying to rain on the parade or anything - I just couldn't see where $80 went from the pictures. All I could see was a filter and a bracket.

Regardless, my boost went from 15psi at full throttle (stock airbox and paper filter) to 18-19psi now that difference alone is worth $80 to me

looks like he decided not to use the 180 piece...... and you are right, he could have bought a filter like that from an auto parts store

it's not a 180* piece, it's aluminum ducting that's supposed to replace your stock snorkel... the picture is very deceiving

I have the same filter, just im running the true heat shield and 2 OEM heatshields haha. But this filter wakes up the turbo sound a good amount and you can feel a little difference in throttle response, plus the MPG did a go up a little as well.

I highly suggest doing it. I gained 2mpg on the last two tanks compared to my stock airbox/paper filter. My boost gauge shows 19psi now where before it showed 15psi. That has to be good for something (I also have a full turboback exhaust, n75h, FMIC, etc etc)

    Re: K&N 57-0282 Intake Kit - ** REVIEW **

I have to say my intake sounds phenomenal. It sounds like it is sucking in small children and birds. I love driving around and listening to the hiss echoing off the trees around my house with the sunroof open.

One time I was coasting down the hill near my house and there was a small dog in one of the neighbor's yard - little poodle or something. Just as I passed it, I hit the gas enough to make some intake noise but not too much exhaust.

    WHOooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooSH!

That poor little doggy jumped straight up in the air - didn't know WTF.

    Re: K&N 57-0282 Intake Kit - ** REVIEW **

all you really need is a kn cone filter for like 30 bucks and heatshield (you can even use the heatshield from the airbox and rig it, doesnt work well but it works). you take the maf out of the airbox, put it on the tip, u r supposed to put pipe (people use U bend pipe) between the filter and the maf but you can run it like he did w/o pipe and like this cone filter > maf > tip. Basically the best part about this mod is not having to deal with the airbox when working on the car. Thats my main reason for having it. Sound is nice too

To OP: a while after i installed my cone filter, and it finally got hot out. i had my ac on and poped the hood. if you feel by the filter when the ac is on. the fan blows hot air on right to the filter. after seeing this i logged my IATs and only noticed a ~ 5 deg difference. also only noticed a ~ 7 (+/-) deg increase in max IATs from airbox (30C) to cone (37C)

yes you can get it at auto store, just measure ur maf O.D. and make sure u get a filter that fits it. Forgot what size it is exactly, 2.75 inch i think, not sure tho. its easy, just rip out the stock air box and take the maf out. install filter + maf to tip, done
