    Searched, Searched, and no help..

So i kind of blew my front speakers, not to the point of bad music but just to the point of harsh crackling highs so i just decided i would throw my 6.5 Alpine R components in that I had in my old car..
First problem is, i think they will be underpowered but i dont mind for the moment because i will be upgrading everything later and can run an amp to them.
Second problem is... HOW do you take off everything on your doors to get to the speakers?! I had these speakers in a WRX which was 2 bolts and a bunch of pins so now i look at these doors just completely confused.. any help would be great because i would like to start tuesday.
    Thank you everyone.

Will upgrading the speakers and keeping the stock HU make a big improvement? I was thinking about doing the same thing.

I was debating the same and swapped in a new HU. I'm very happy with the results. Added bonus... now I'm running a sub again which I never got around to doing in the B5. Loving that.

    Burtonnboarda:
The old school type R components are very power hungry. I hope they sound decent off that factory HU. Be careful that you don't turn it up too loud to compensate because I am assuming the rear speakers are still stock. You may not be able to hear the distortion over your front speakers.

    kwimberly:

No, upgrading the stock speakers and keeping the same non-bose HU will not improve sound much if at all, unless your factory speakers are blown. In fact, it may actually sound like you are lacking mid-bass with peaky highs from the lack of power. It won't hurt anything of course, underpowering speakers causing them to blow is a myth. If you want an actual improvement you would have to either amp the aftermarket speakers keeping the factory HU using line output converters or buy an aftermarket HU then optionally add an amp. I haven't heard the non-bose a4 speakers but, normally a factory setup sounds better than cheap replacement speakers thrown in there because the factory speakers are designed to work in the air space of the doors and the exact wattage the stock HU provides. Thus, the conclusion is if the speakers are not blown and your not ready to spend AT LEAST $150 for a decent component set with an HU or amp or both stick to the factory setup.

Re: Searched, Searched, and no help..

Rizvfe00: Thank you for reminding me how much it takes to power the type r's... its been over a year and I had completely forgot that when i ran them without an amp I blew out my rear speakers, in a wrx it was a cheap fix but not for an audi..

But thanks everyone for the links it will be so helpful when im ready to do this, but for now i think im going to just save up and buy some a couple amps and some subs for the back and redo everything at once so theres power going to every part of the car.
