    Nearly Died Today

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
so this is how the story begins..this friday was my high school prom, and i went to a town nearby on friday to pick up my tie that i reserved at a tux place. while im going there, my shitty pirelli p6's fishtail and i slam the whole left side of the car on a huge curb, throwing off my wheel balance and alignment and loosening my axle bolt (which i did not know)

this is a picture after the little crash, im lucky there was no body damage

so after prom, my whole grade went straight down the shore to wildwood, which is 3 hours from here where we live. The car drove fine until the last 10 minutes. The car's ABS light came on, the speedometer stopped working and the rotor was making LOUD grinding sounds.

when we got there i checked it out and the car looked like this

so the axle bolt is missing which is very dangerous and can cause the wheel to fall right off. but me being my dumb confident cocky self thought it wouldnt hurt to drive 2 miles to a autozone to see if they might have a temporary bolt that would fit in to last the way home.

literally 20 feet infront of the store on rt. 37...my wheel goes crooked and the car skids out (im lucky the wheel didnt fly off cuz then my car would be done)

no pictures but the brake caliper is in half, the brake caliper carrier is in half, and the axle is off the track and i have two circle things with me that have many balls on them. oh and the rotor is still on the rim. what a great way to end prom weekend

    usual answer from noob driver.
You were driving too fast for conditions and stop blaming tires. I have the same half worn and never had problems.

    Re: Nearly Died Today

That is a very, very strange thing to happen from an impact. The axle bolts are installed with a LOT of torque, IIRC about 90 ft/lb plus another 90 degrees to stretch the bolt. I dont see how that could have loosened from an impact unless it sheared. Very strange.

You should probably have the alignment checked to make sure the control arms were not tweaked. New bearing and bolt is ~$80, labor is expensive b/c you need to remove the upright. Calipers are cheap b/c people upgrade to the B5 S4 equipement and dump their stock components.

If I were you, research how to perform the repairs (mostly available on the DIY here and on AW) and get wrenching. I hope you learned from this, those axle bolts are CRITICAL, imagine the torque that is exerted on the bearing while turning. Without that bolt... well, you know what happens.

www.autohausaz.com has parts for good prices, including that bearing kit.

www.genuineaudiparts.com - email them for any weird part, they ahve great service

Shokan is the all audi junkyard in NY. I've bought a few things from them in the past and have had good results. www.shokan.com or 1-800-all-audi is the phone number. They probably have a used caliper/carrier in stock.

You should know prices since you work there. That sounds like lots of work. I used to try and break traction on my P6 tires and had no luck. You must have hit sand. Thats some tough wheel you got there since it didn't get bent.

I liked this scenario better the first time I saw it, as a video they showed us in driver's ed. You know the one, where they show teenagers driving badly then getting killed on the best night of their lives? It's such a cliche I actually think he might be making this up.

First of all.... glad you're ok.

sorry about the damage to the car....

$50 for caliper/carrier is a GREAT deal (my opinion).

There are a few of us in NJ that will be able to help you out with your repairs. Get the parts.... make the post.... we will come.

Just my two cents, but it really sounds like you're holding info back here... when I bought my car it had original skins on, with > 70,000 miles on them... and way out of alignment. I tried to get the car sideways... lots, and not much luck. Until winter... that is.

Come on, you're among friends; give us the truth behind the story. It could save another AZ'er a similar fate...

I have p6's and they suck ass. They squeel really early, and there bubbly and they look like sh*t too.

But would never, EVER, lose control to the point of no fixable-ness on the street. Especially on a street i drive everyday.

    Re: Nearly Died Today

for crap's sake, he got a little loose in the rain and hit the curb. Safety nazis, attack!!

I've done it before, especially when I had Nitto 555s on my wheels (came with them, I wouldnt have bought them). I've had the rear end step or front push out with S02's and 3's, Pilot sports, Dunlop Sport Maxx's... no tire is perfect in the rain. Im lucky I was never near a curb, but I've certainly drifted into the other lane a few times. Maybe I just drive too fast, but I've never crashed and have always had no problem pulling the car back with a little throttle and quattro assistance. Driving in the rain is what makes an Audi fun to drive, you have soooo much control when its on the limit, unlike rwd cars.

He busted up his car, he needs advice on how to fix it, not advice on how to drive. I think its safe to assume he learned something about the handling of the car and tires, and that is enough said.
