who wants to help me find an engine? (paging clint mike shawn doug and greg etc)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
It's official - rod through the block

looking to stay 1.8L, rods are apparently a must on my setup , pistons would be nice, but I'm working on a budget since i just blew 1200 on ANOTHER clutch setup seeing as how my AWE wasn't quite cutting it... (spun the clutch clear through 3rd gear while rowing like a maniac after a launch trying to catch it.. then barely grabbed 4th after totally lifting off the throttle)

the damage i could see from the outside (through the fist sized hole in my engine, and the half-dollar sized one in my oil pan) indicates that my crankshaft is toast (sheared metal off the side), the rod is nowhere to be found, and there's probably some damage to the cylinder wall (sarcasm..)

anyways, i need an engine ASAP - I don't care if it's an AEB or w/e, just needs to be a 1.8 out of an audi of some sort. you guys know the drill. still gotta talk to the guys around here and see what's best as far as putting the bottom end together goes, and about how cheap i can keep this. If I can't keep the bill on a built engine low enough i may be forced to revert to stock or go with a less-aggressive program... (boooooo)

sad part is that there were no preliminary signs (even looking back on it) that anything was wrong. the only indication that anything bad was about to happen was a slight hesitation i got pulling onto the highway in 4th gear... put it in 5th - hit boost - then BOOM... lots of smoke, huge oil spray on the highway, low oil light, and oh yeah -- satan punched a hole in my block.

    JV:LSIUVS:JLKSFGJS:LGHLSKF:LSFJ!!!!!!!!!one1111

im really frustrated, but eager to get it back together... I guess the only thing still bothering me is WHY the motor blew like it did. My best guess is either i snapped the rod outright or i spun a bearing which led to a bent/snapped rod. Oil was fine (a good 3 quarts is on the highway killing a hippie as we speak) it was boosting normally (until that 4th gear pull to 5500) and the only funny noise it was making was an exhaust leak at the mani-to-head gasket which i doubt would cause a blown motor....

any help is greatly appreciated, im done ranting now.

What have your logs been looking like? When do you hit full boost? The torque spike down low is what kills the AMB OEM rods. Who else has this file besides you and Josh (built motor)?

I have an engine I could sell you. PM me and we'll chat.

Re: who wants to help me find an engine? (paging clint mike shawn doug and greg etc)

I highly highly highly doubt you were making tons of power with your gtrs, especially on pump that would be the caused of this. Something else was to blame besides to much power because clearly many others have ran over 30,000 miles with the gtrs and some at 300whp daily like myself when I ran meth and Shawn when he ran meth with his gtrs.

Guess your cheapest fastest owner driven dream just went out the window

Sucks to hear that happened though. I once threw a rod through the side of my block with my last car with one of the 3 engines I had in it due to a snapped rod bolt. The stock bolts didnt like nitrous so they lasted about 6 months before I scattered it across the road 1 hour from home.

I am not going to bash anyones tune, FWIW I have been running REVO BT since Sepember 2004

B6Lovin, I will be traveling all day today but I can hook you up with a killer motor if you would like...

Just ask Dirtybird...I coordinated his motor for him and it is beyond bulletproof and inexpensive too (as far as Cosworth built 8,500 things go)

This is what happens when you let a bunch of French-Canadians tune your motor.

    REVO FTFW!!!!

BTW, did I mention I'm running T7 at 22 PSI in 90 F weather these days? No meth, just pump and pulling high 2s timing correction factor. Yeah, REVO's 550 file

I'd love a bulletproof motor like that, but I just can't afford to spend that much. I'm looking to stay under 3 or 4 thousand if possible... Built bottom end is the only necessity... and that's pending a final diagnosis of the cause.

I have to wait till everything gets torn out i guess to see if we can get a better idea of what happened... what sucks is that I'm afraid we may never get a totally clear picture of what caused the failure.. so I'll never know what the weak-link was. in which case I have to worry about blowing another motor.

anyways.. cheapest may have gone out the window (but not by much... my whole build still stayed pretty damn cheap.. and the extra budgeting i did is the reason i can afford a new engine on top of the 2nd clutch/flywheel), but fastest is by no means gone. In the time that it was running i walked a few mid cars that already have several consistent 1/4 mile slips... so we'll see what happens once it's back together.

I'm also considering meth injection to maybe keep things a little safer, because if i don't tweak it for more timing it should act more as a safe guard than a power booster right?

Definitely something that's been on my mind - guess that's what i get for trying something new. As far as I know, Josh and I are the ONLY b6 a4's running Unitronics BT tuning... and I'm pretty sure we're the only ones on 630cc injectors with a 28 series turbo. I'm not going to bash unitronics or the tune - the car was running great and it was fast as hell (by comparison). It just may have been too much for the stock bottom end... atleast that's what I'm hoping.

B6Lovin, You could get away with a Eurocode/Cosworth short block for about or under 3-4k. Knightstick, I don't recall my total, but I have a 2.0L, Eurospec forged knifedged crank, Scat rods, JE pistons, Ferrera valves w/ titanium retainers, a 3071r and a Southbend clutch. All said and done, I have about 8k in my motor but that doesn't include labor, but I'm making close to 400AWHP on pump gas. I did all the labor except the short block on my own.

That is kinda what I was getting at, but I was beating around the bush. I know he is running the Unitronics file and had problems with it. I was just saying that there was no way he was making 330whp range on his pump file to where he should have worried about throwing a rod so something (such as tuning) may have been to blame

How much did you spend, I mean the "complete solution" is only $2700, I can't imagine you saved that much more after purchasing a turbo, manifold, test pipe, injectors and then the Uni tune all seperate.

O and check the top of the pistons and see if they crumbled pieces off one or more or if there is a hole in it, that would be detonation from your tune. Can you tell if the rod snapped or if the rod end cap just came off from snapped rod bolts by looking in the hole?

thanks doug -- I'm looking over exactly what i need now. I'll get you a response asap.

chris - should i call and talk directly to david about the short block? Like i said earlier, I'm just most concerned about not having further bottom end failure. What do you think the turnaround time would be on a built shortblock from them? I'm also looking to have this done and together rather quickly...

didn't realize it was that cheap -- in the end i guess i only saved about 200 bucks if we're only comparing prices of what's in that kit. hahahaha.

i did save money other places too (IC, exhaust, etc), but i'm not counting that towards the cost of the build next to a kit like that.

and will do on the pistons... never noticed any detonation, and its not something I'm un-familiar with (there are some cars around raleigh that just make you want to cry they're tuned so badly...) never noticed much if any timing pull from the car either. oh well... just gotta wait till the motor is out and apart now. I'll put up pictures of the damage once everything is out.

Turnaround for a short block is about 4 days, I highly recommend going with a longblock though...

As Chris can attest he saved about $400 by assembling the head himself and trust me...installing 20 valve is quite a bitch and by the time it was done, he would have probably found a easier way to earn the $400 to pay to have it done.

You are going to need to find about $4,000 +/-10% to do it correctly.

so a built 1.8L longblock from eurocode will be around 4g's? I'm assuming that's just an assembled head and block, with no accessories, manifolds, or timing belt shiz, right?

and the thing with my situation is that I don't think i'll need a new head... and certainly not a built one at this point. So if i get a built shortblock then i just swap heads right?

If you popped a rod, there is a 99% chance you killed the head.

Longblocks include a timing belt...all of the rest of the stuff transfers from one motor to the next.

gotcha... I guess I'll have to wait till it's torn apart to know which I'd need.

No problem. It is another option for you. I'll leave it up to you. Either way, its no big deal to me.

I do recommend you do a full build on anything. A fully built motor is one headache you don't have to worry about and it is also worthwhile if you're going from ground up.

The place where you can make some expensive decisions is in the cylinder head itself. At that point you need to consider your ultimate long-term goals. I chose the route of OEM intake valves, Supertech Exhaust valves & guides as well as OEM lifters, springs & camshafts to keep the cost reasonable for my car's goals.

I agree with Greg, your current head will have some damage to it and won't be a straight bolt-on to a new shortblock.

Alas, you won't know the extent of your engine's damage until you tear it apart. Are you tearing it apart or is someone else? I recommend you do it (if you have the time). This way you have more control over assessing the damage.

I did not read the OP, since you are interested on staying 1.8L, I think you should find a used AMB motor and put some IE rods in it, Fererra exhaust valves and new springs/retainers, update the water pump and timing belt.

All of this would cost right around $3K

Did you call Eurocode? You can also use an AWM (I think) block, they come in 1.8T Jettas and Passats and much more common, hence cheaper. Also, pull all the spark plugs and see if they're damaged if not the head might be ok, if not at least you can save your time and just look for a long block or source the head and block seperately

Re: who wants to help me find an engine? (paging clint mike shawn doug and greg etc)

josh -- no logs of when things went up in smoke... i did some initial logs on my friend's laptop (i only have a desktop and a vag cable.) just to make sure things were ok. everything checked out as normal, so i wasn't in a rush to continue logging as long as i didnt change anything.... lesson learned i guess, now I'm going to try and set something up so that I'm always logging just in case.

and no worries doug -- my guy called today and said he found me a block, crank, pistons, and my head looks like it might be ok with some light work. my rods, bearings, seals, etc are all on order and should be here soon...

hopefully the car will be back up and running before the end of next week.

24psi as stated earlier. guess following in josh's footsteps was a little too much on a stock motor

and so i hear -- hopefully this thing will be back together and good to go sometime relatively soon.
