We moved to wisconsin last summer from Minnesota. I noticed the air isnt ice cold this summer so wanted to give it a squirt of freon. i seen bottles of R134a at walmart in Minnesota so last night i went to go pickup a bottle to put in and find out that Wisconsin doesnt sell freon to consumers. You have to have a certified tech do it. I was so ticked because i was in Minnesota last week and could of picked up a few bottles.
i guess Wsconsin and California dont sell the bottles.
Its easy to do though if you just need a minor charge.

Nope. Like I said Wisconsin and Caifornia wil not sell R134a to regular consumers, you have to take it to a shop and have a licensed tech charge it. Other states sell it off the shelf. There may be other states that dont sell it off the shelf too but thos are the two I know of.

The old R12 is not made any more but our cars have the newer R134a.

Freon is a CFC, which is worse for the environment than other greenhouse gases because it's got about 25000x the heat-holding capacity and lifespan of natural gases. Basically, it fucks up the ozone through chemical reactions. Wow, I'm glad I paid attention in my Organic Chemistry class lol

Well if your car is low on freon that means its leaking out so technically you are supposed to hook it up to a machine and suck the freon out and put your system under a vaccum then see if it holds pressure without leaking. if it does then yu can re add freon.

most times they have a small leak where you have to charge it overy few years or so then you can just add some and it works fine.

but some states get anal about it.

me too spent 90 bux today and charged my ac ($40 kit) at autozone and bosch icons ($40)......... kit at autozone was 40 on sale. pick one up......... and the low pressure port is the smaller cap line next to the battery...... funny thing is my compressor wouldnt engage before and now everything is chill lol..............

only maintenance left is
differential seal
change to my old vast t boot... having issues wit silicone one
fix bent rim

even if there isn't a leak, r134a will slowly lose it's thermophysical properties if you don't cycle the fluid for months at a time, so for those of us who see winters, make sure you run your a/c on the highway every couple of weeks during the winter

Problem with this is our compressor's dont kick in if the outside temperature is below 40 degree's (I think that is the temp) so even if you turn the air on the a/c compressor doesnt engage.

I think most car's have this feature but I know our audi's have this feature.


I guess if you can have your car in a heated garage then you can get it to kick in, but not everyone has that luxury.

gointoscott I don't know how close you are to Illinois but if you do make it down here I know they can sell R134 to consumers here if its any help-
