Hey guys!!! I am slowly weeding all my problems out. I am going to explain this as much as I can.

I have a 2000 A4 1.8t Quattro with an ATW engine. The CV joint on the driver side seems like it mounts into the tranny. There seems to be a seal behind the mounting bracket and I think I have a leak there. I do not know the correct terms, so hopefully I am pointing you guys in the right direction.

    Re: Transmission

That's the drive flange seal....gear oil behind there. The seal can be replaced with on-car service. If it is a big leak, you might want to check the oil level and top off. There's a plug by the axle flange. Left side manual, right auto I think. Parked on level ground and warm not hot, oil should be at the edge of the hole.

Let me ask you this, has the car had CV in the recent past? It's pretty easy to accidentally nail the lip of this seal with the axle splines. Leak may take awhile to develop afterwards.

    Re: Transmission

I haven't seen any writeups but according to the book it doesn't look that bad. Axle hub bolt, heat shield, axle to flange bolts, pull the shaft, drive flange, seal. Exhaust may or may not have to be loosened....i've never done this so..... but I bet if you can do brake work etc, you could tackle this.

Make sure the leak is coming from the drive flange seal. Give the leaking stuff a look and sniff. Gear oil smells stronger than engine oil and is thicker. I would check the level if you are still driving the car #1.

More than a couple of guys here have done this at least once. pass along whether its an auto or manual.

    Re: Transmission

Thanks. It a automatic. Gear oil???? So this car has geal oil, trans fluid, motor oil????? Wow!!!!!! I am mechanical, just not car mechanical. I am seeing the leak on what looks to be the seal. It does not look thick. But it does not look like oil either. I take it that trans fluid is not red in this car.......

    Re: Transmission

I don't think the original AT fluid is red....maybe gold??? Whatever color it started as the stuff is probably brown now. I do know the viscosity for Audi ATF is closer to motor oil while the gear oil in the final drive and differential is the heavy stuff.

Gear oil???? So this car has geal oil, trans fluid, motor oil????? Wow!!!!!!
LOL oh yeah..... brake, power steering and coolant too with VAG $pecial $easonings.

    Re: Transmission

I appreciate all your help. While on my way to 100% audi functionality, I twisted a rim this weekend. If you could help me with the types of gear oil and transmission fluid we use in the audis, I would greatly appreciate it.

    Re: Transmission

Hey, no problem. Glad to pass on what I know right. Another guy on here may have actually done the seal replacement.......

The Differential and transmission take VAG # G 052 162 A2....aka VW ATF
www.ecstuning.com has it...their part number is ES#1087 for 1Q bottle.

The rest...Front Final, Center Diff and Real Final drive all take synthetic gear oil 75W90.

    ECS has the seals too.
    Front Seal Left ES#5812
    Front Seal Right ES#5813

A writeup on pulling your axles here.

A Haynes book is good but the real factory manual comes from Bentley Publishers. You can get it on DVDROM for $99 or web access for as low as $20-30. Before I bought the book, I've just made copies from our library's pro Chilton & Haynes collection.
